Well, my printer just died it was old. So, I've been to the Linux sites but they don't list current selling models of printers, anyone know if the new HP C510a PhotoSmart printer will work with Linux SUSE?? I also like the Canon Printer such as the Canon Pixma MX 882 and I did e-mail them @ Canon and they said that none of there printer drivers are made for Linux, However the Linux site had some Canon printers that work with Linux...Both Printers are new so neither is on the Linux listings so what's a person to choose????
Any help would be great....

HP lists printer drivers for Linux. (No idea if they are any better than the ones they provide for Windows.)

HP's are generally the best, HP has a dedicated linux team. Cannon is hit and miss, most of their devices work and cannon europe makes some drivers. Lexmark also has some drivers but stay away from epson (or it might be the opposite. It might be stay away from lexmark but not epson)

+1 for hp. i've used a number of hp printers on linux in the past few years and have had great success getting them to work.

sometimes, the more advanced features of some of the all in one printers don't always work with linux because they often require software that was written for windows only to perform said tasks. however, hp does have decent support as Shelnutt2 mentioned.

Kitty2Kat,

If you're still keen on the Pixma MX882, I've been able to get it to work with ubuntu. The driver is available at http://support-vn.canon-asia.com/contents/VN/EN/0100329802.html

Print capability works, but none of the fancy scanning or faxing functions.

Kilgore

Lexmark is evil

I hate them no matter the OS, nothing but problematic POS'

Another +1 for HP. I recently wiped my old rig of Windows and put Ubuntu on there. My HP printer functioned seamlessly throughout the transition.

My Epson worked fairly well in Linux, was able to get scanner working as well. HP is really easy. HP has installed without any additional drivers in last 3 distros I've tried, scanner as well.

Check the openprinting database at http://www.openprinting.org/printers and http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/database/databaseintro

I use an HP officejet 5510 all-in-one. The printer and scanner work fine. I never tried faxing from within linux, I just fax papers directly from the 5510.

Before you buy a printer, check the price of ink. For some printers, like the 5510, you can buy a refill kit and refill your ink cartridges instead of buying new HP ink cartridges every time you run out of ink.
