I have an Audigy hooked up to my stereo reciever and it can easily drive it to full output. The sound card itself would only have an output in millivolts and at most 1 volt at the extreme end. Its outputs are on par with other line level sources such as a component tape deck or cd player and aren't meant to directly drive a speaker load which would quickly fry it, the impedence its designed to work with for line level inputs is well above 10,000 ohms verses 8 ohms of a regular speaker. With such a high impedence load it will only put out a few milliwatts. If its a 400 self watt powered system you are hooking it up to you should have no problems as it will amplify the line level input up to speaker level voltages.
