im a pretty big newb when it comes to overclocking, but so far my p3 800 is @ 978
this is without any cooling, loadtemp about 45c
i have a big advantage because my basement is extremely cold
anyways, my bios automaticly overclocks in increments of 6mhz and i slowly go up by 6, testing for stabily, temps etc but it sure is slow!!!
do you guys go up in higher/lower increments?
is there a point that you guess your cpu will be able to perform at and you oc up to that point?
another thing, this is all without cooling, ill easily get to a gig, is this good? my cpu is one of those good ocers?

If you can get an idea where the chip lies around I usually find out what it can post at and boot into windows at. From there I can narrow down voltage, cooling etc

Usually I have an idea of what this chip should make with no modifications, then raise it gradually from there.

The reason that your BIOS overclocks in increments of 6MHz is because your multiplier is set at 6. So if you have an 800MHz processor running at 133x6... you raise it to 134MHz and then you have an 806MHz processor. I'd say that your processor might hit a gig with good cooling, but watch your PCI devices as your PCI bus will be around 42MHz.

pci devices, like sound card, video card net work card????

Yep. Those are the PCI devices.. watch out for the Network card... those are notorious for not liking high PCI BUS speeds. Also, watch your hard drive, it also runs off the PCI bus, so make sure you aren't getting corrupted data. Most of the newer ones aren't as bad about that, though.
