In the past year, BOINC volunteers have contributed over 6.8 billion CPU core-hours to a variety of research projects. Thanks, and congratulations on being the world's biggest computing cloud!
Wow... Almost 776,000 cores running nonstop 24/7 for a year.

Wow that is amazing! I wonder what kind of power consumption an array like that would have.

At an average of 2 cores per system, using 110watts of electricity for the whole CPU thats about $58 Million in electricity costs if you use the nation average of 11 cents per KWH in the US.
Now obviously that does not factor in GPUs and the costs of electricity in other countries which would likely make that figure significantly higher.
I got bored at work and decided to do some number crunching.
Edit: I may be completely wrong by the way. I was by no means ever good at math.

6.8 billion (with a 'B') core-hours! WOW!
2,866,366 hosts according to BOINCStats. That's an average of ~23700 core-hours/host per year, which comes out to ~2.7 cores per host (@ 24/7), on average as that doesn't take into account the part-time crunchers - and there are a lot of them.

Impressive to say the least!

Makes me wonder how many hosts/cores ocforums has for SETI? lol

Well, it says "Total available hosts for this team ... 5,592" and we're doing 0.70597% of the SETI work. I don't know what time period that percent is based on but our credits today were very roughly the same percent of all work today.
0.706% of that 6.8 billion core-hours would be ~48 million.

0.7% might not seem much but the stats page also stated "Accumulated more credit than % of all SETI@Home Teams: 99.99%"
Does that mean we're in the top 0.01% worldwide?

Considering we're still #7 in the world for total points (and #7 last week for DAC, too) I would imagine we're well ahead of most teams ... :)

Yeah it does.. kinda sounds better than it is :p I'm 4th in New Zealand for credit on SETI, which is more than 99.91883% of fellow citizens, even though I only make up 1.24166% of the total credit.
Then there are weird stats like this guy (http://boincstats.com/stats/user_graph.php?pr=sah&id=124328). New Zealand's #1 cruncher for RAC and total credit, yet he's only accumulated more than 99.97971% of fellow citizens (which doesn't even make sense) lol go figure.
Either way, congrats to all! Lets pump up those numbers :D 6.8billion.. wow..
