I have a physics project in school where I have to wire a system with 3 switches that will each turn a light on and off. I understand the concept behind wiring the 4 way switch, and so I need two 3way switches and one 4way switch. But the 4 ways at home depot cost ten dollars! That's crap! So I'm wondering, is there a way for me to wire my own 4 way switch?

There would be two inputs and two outputs, and when the switch is switched the input/output pairs are switched, so how could I replicate this on my own?

make sure you study the simplicity of the 3 way switch first. using 2 siwtches and thier common connection

then mentally stuff the 3rd one in, which switches from top to bottom both at the same time and has to be DPDT
