View Full Version : Servers saturated
5-6am est 2-3am pst server impossible. Yesrterday it was almost as bad and it was a school holiday.
Distributed computing is a great idea if the sponser is willing to provide adequate resources otherwise its just a boondoggle.
Harvey Allen
I've got 7 completed wu's to return, and since yeserday evening all I've received from Berkeley is a "No such file or directory Can't connect to server...". You would think if they were serious about their endeavor, they would want the results back ASAP.
Greg- Academics think the world is full of grad students willing or coerced into working for nothing.
Faced with overwhelming success SETI's response is drop users to fit finite resources instead of accepting the challenge and stepping up the pace.
It's been great fun while it lasted but now the amount of crunching exceeds the amount of bandwith available to maintain it. There will still be pockets of availability on the weekends but soon that will disappear too.
A boycott would send a message but that's an impossible task so SETI will muddle through and it's originators will collect their accolades and academic perks for doing a half way job.

.......On the other hand, it's a worthwhile project IMHO, and all the griping about bandwidth won't help the project at all.
I'm sure Berkeley knows of the problems, and are (hopefully!) working on a solution.
Crunch on, my fellow Overclockers, and keep the faith!
Well lets hope so (the fix) I would really hate to see the limitation be somthing like bandwidth..... my .02 Jim

What they need is someone to shell out 20-40 grand for them to get thier own DEDICATED SETI ONLY SERVER.. I'm sure they have millionaires crunching wus same as us.. and why one of them havent donated money to help the situation i kinda find quite odd... Hey it would be a huge tax write off.. kinda sad no one would do this.. It would help this project tremendously..
Till then we get to share a Cra# server with 60,000 students and teachers hooray for us, lol!!
Keep'em Crunchin!!
Not having any problems whatsoever here except during the day. All of my units upload and cache refills over night. Now I don't sit up all night to see what time that is, but it works at some point.

I haven't had no problems.....In my opinion the only owns with some trouble in getting they results uploaded are the ones using a dial-up connection. When the bandwidth problem began, I was having problems with my modem, so I just zipped all my results and uploaded them at work, where I have a permanet connection the the Internet.
If you have a permanet connection to the 'Net, just leave the autoconnect option and sooner or later you'll upload your results. But, if you are on a dial-up, just wait for the night and weekends to upload your results.

I have a broadband DLS and in the past 24 hours I've only
been able to get 5 WUs. I'm kinda getting worried. I might
hit one of the private caches setup by our team members.
In which case, I hope you guys stock up more then 350 WUs,
cause I burn through about 25-30 a day now!

Installed SETIQueue. I'll see how it runs tonight.
I got one ping into Berkeley. Making progress.
[edit: Two completed wu's uploaded. Much progress.]
Does SETIQueue autodial on a dial-up connection?
Can't find any reference yet.

This is getting crazy, I tried to upload at 3am and it wouldn't go. I have WU's cached on all of my machines and I want to get them in. I hope they fix there bandwith issues soon.
pms- Try SETI Queue.

It's simple to install and it's woking for me. In the daytime too. 3 wu's uploaded and no aggravation.
Harvey
edit: 4 wu's. This sucker is flying.
Hehehehe I got one in today (thats 20% of my daily output!) btu without my auto dialup working, I am going to be screwed, I go to the field next week till april! Jim :burn:
PS Woohoo! spoke too soon sending another thats 40% of todays.... LOL

I have hit a snag in upload too...
I have about 14 units that haven't uploaded... not even overnight with SETI Driver trying every hour....
has been working fine until last night, or the night before...
Am still OK as I run a cache of 50 on each machine, but sheesh... Shep looks like he's really getting ahead of me...

same here.......have more than a dozen WUs waiting to upload and filled. it all started from yesterday.....
good thing is after last surge, i've up all my rigs' cache for a whole week. so, i still have 5 more days to go.....(crossing my fingers....)
I tried all weekend to upload WU's....I tried at 6 am Saturday morning but nothing would go through.
Yes, I'm crazy for being up that early on a weekend, but that's just how dedicated I am! :)

Hehe, sounds like me....
I tell my girlfriend I have to "tuck the kids in bed" and I run off
to check all my machines before I go to sleep.
It's especially important for me to check on them all at least
twice a day, because I just built them all this week, and I have
no idea how stable they are.
So far, 48 hours without a single reboot, crash, or general
hiccup.

I now understand your anger, hallen.....if you are moving that volumen of WU in one day thrue a dial-up
You should try to use one of the SETIQues servers, as they have a dedicated connection and can try for several hour to send your results to berkeley.
Anyone got a good SetiQueue server I can download off? I'm running off my last supply of WU!
With a cable connection and running 24/7 I've been able to get through it to this point, however I had limited success uploading last night. I'm sitting on 17WUs now, with another 8 to 10 due by 1:00AM. I'm cacheing with Seti Driver 5 to 15 WUs per machine depending on machine.
I should be allright through tomorrow. We'll see how this plays out in the future, it could have a pretty big impact across the board if the situation doesn't get any better.
I'm considering the Folding team. This is getting rediculous. I backed up so many WUs that SETIQueue started dropping them. I've lost over 20 the past 2 days and had to reinstall it completely this morning. Still have over 20 WUs to transfer from Sunday!
The newly installed one won't download any new WUs (has downloaded 3 in about 5 hours now) so I've got 5 rigs sitting idle just waiting...3 of them are duallies so that's 8 processors doing nothing.
I'm going to give it until the weekend to straighten out and if not...it's been fun.

Jon Just keep trying I finally got my 38 backed up wu's to finally go thru after 5-6 hours of manually doing it.. The server seems fine right now uploading/downloading very nicely.. Hope it lasts..
The bandwidth problem will ruin the entire thing if it's not straightened out. If they don't fork over the cash for more lines, it'll always be like it is now (and only get worse) and it won't be worth it, at least not to me.
It's been 6 hours now since I've reinstalled SETIQueue and I'm still only looking at 3 WUs being downloaded. I can finish 10 in he time it's taken to get those 3.
This isn't worth it folks. Berkeley has obviously gave SETI the lowest possible network priority. They could give a rat's a$$ about our complaints. They are abondoning the project.

02-19-02, 10:41 PM
Hey! Good attitude guys!
Berkley is giving it a low priority so ****'em.
Great. Nice to see you hang in there when the going is a little
tougher.
Nice to see that (and I speak honestly) any day now we could
find something anything.
And worse yet, THIS IS FOR FUN!
I'm sorry, but I do this for the fun of it. And even though I'm
new to this group, I've been around long enough to know how
important SETI is for a core of people who believe "We Are Not
Alone" and "It would be such a waste of space".
Until they shut off the servers, until Arecibo stops listening to
the heavens, I'll still be crunching WUs, even if my 25 WUs a
day are all thats done, I'll still be doing it!
If a little bandwidth issue is enough to break people off the
team, then maybe all that power under your desk is going to
waste no matter what you do with it. I can send you a copy
of Ms. Packman to keep you busy if you like...
Sorry, but quitters just rub me the wrong way.
I think I'm gonna E-mail some students over at Berkley Campus
and see if I can't talk one of them into setting up a Cache Server
for me, even if I have to send him the bloomin machine!!
I've worked to hard to quit :)
NOW it looks like everyone feels like I did till the middle of last week...and just when all the boxes were back up again THIS AGAIN
Well I stuck to it and got a few in cache to get me through the next few days but I could easily have 200 more WU's than I have right now considering all the idle time and the 20 or 30 that got dropped the past month or so. My daily production was approaching 15-18 per day...not a ton compared to some guys but a lot to me.
My advice...set your cache to 25 or more on the box you look at daily and dont even look at your other boxes till that box uploads...just my $0.02 b/c my patience is also running short

The Folding@home server has experienced similar bandwidth problems in the past (or even worse).....and there seems to be no caching program for Folding@home.....
We just have to be a little bit more patient with all this problems, remember we are doing this for fun, not like some kind of Via Cruxis, so up your caches and keep on crunching.....
BTW, you can't complain if you are not donating $$$$$ to solve this bandwidth problem. Let's see it like this: How much money have you spend in your farm? If you donate to SETI a small amount of money (and we all do it) SETI@home project might be able to buy some more bandwidth.....Stop waitong for someone else to solve the problem and help to solve it yourself :)
Actually FAH has caching now, but it is stupid in my estimation, if you cannot upload the unit it will download a new one, *since the up and downs are handled by different servers. Sometimes it will not upload all the WU's that are sitting there. Great hey ? Just like I still have not found a way to make SETI play nice with FAH even with seti set to low priority.

Ok guys, I am utterly lost here.... I thought 1 WU was the deal you get and it loads it, reads it and sends it off... right? How are you guys doing so many a day??? I dont get it... Cant 1 machine do 1 WU at a time? or? And how are you all getting so many WU's cached and all that or whatever? You all are seriouslly loosing me here with all this stuff.... I have 1 machine running seti... it takes between 1-2 days to get the whole thing finished.. and its an 800 Duron with 128PC2100 ram... not a slow machine, but not that fast either... Would someone mind explaining to me WTF??? :D
Thanks

We are running the command line client and setispy and seti driver. Seti driver caches WU's for you so you don't have to connect all the time. It does one WU at a time. Here (http://www.ocsetiteam.com/Instr1.htm) is a link to set up the clc. Only thing is you wont be able to get WU's possibly. With that system your time will drop to 7-8 hours per wu with the clc.

Glad to see our hottest new crunchers is feeling bwtter :) I've been with seti long enough to know that thesse things will happen. There was a period of a week last year that no results to be sent and no new WU's could be had. After that I set my cache to 1 weeks worth, after this I will set them to 1.5 weeks worth hehe

OK. Got me. 10% tithe on all my upgrades (previous week).

Actually it should be cost effective. Maybe I can make some money instead of spending all my time clicking "Transmit".

im using B-Dogg's setiqueue atm for my downloading and uploading
it does seem to be moving a little slow but thats to be expected

hopefully we can all get enough to keep us going

Oddly I can't seem to get into B-Doggs cache server.
I had one machine sit on it all night, and I think it uploaded a
couple, but didn't get anything back. I'll have to check it out
again later, cause all my machines are down to their last few
WUs, and I'm tired of hitting transmit.
Have you tried SetiQueue Raven?
http://www.reneris.com/seti/default.asp
It has persistance while seti driver gives up too quickly.
There are lulls during the day that allow wu uploads and downloads that you miss when manually setting seti driver.

Thanks. Still having headaches but I think it's all ironed out for now. My XPs came in yesterday and I finally got them crunching this morning. Had to reinstall the OS as it kept hard locking after putting them in. SETI then wouldn't authenticate until just now.
My queue is built up to about half of what it should be but should be completely full after another 24 hours. Appears everything goes fine sometime between 12am and 8am PST.
Now I just need to get these Morgans unlocked and overclock the snot out of them and make some more room for this PII 350 Compaq I'm putting back together today...
Jon- I've found the jam easing today too. My theory is that starting monday and peaking tuesday everyone built up their caches and that just made things impossible.
Maybe the worst is over until all those new XP's kick in.
Did you see this XP unlock guide?
