View Full Version : Recommend a dvdrom?
Just looking for a cheap dvdrom player to replace my crappy nec 32x cd drive. I'm leaning towards the Sony 16x/40 dvd drive as it will match my hideous burner.
Any recommendations? I've also looked at Toshiba, Pioneer, etc.

i recommend the Aopen 16x/40x DVD-rom drive from www.tccomputers.com. its awesome! its a fast drive and a slot load, and its about $100 so not too expensive either. :)

I've been using the Pioneer DVD drives and I like them a lot so far. No problems at all with them and I got them for less than $70, but they are tray load models, not slot load.
How's the reliability on those slot load drives? About the same as tray load?
While we're on slot loaders...
Do they have an emergency eject like the tray loaders?? I never can make one out in the pictures, and losing a CD in the drive would SUCK. :D

i don't see an emergency eject button but i'm sure there is some way to get your disc out of the drive if it gets stuck. as far as reliability goes, it works just great. i personally with my plextor burner was slot load too, i like the slot looks and the way that it operates :)

Every time a question of this nature comes along I feel obligated to reply thusly: I recommend getting an "ANTHING BUT A SONY!!!!!" brand.
I prefer Toshiba DVD drives...don't have any foundation for the preference except that many HTPC gurus were using Toshibas.
My Sony OEM burner has worked great for me so far, even though I'm not too fond of any Sony product except their monitor sets.
Brand isn't too important to me, as long as I've heard of it before, even if it's Curtis or Audiovox, I don't give a crap. Cheap, but working good is where it's at :D
