hey guys, if i'm able to mount a 120mm fan over my HS, will this be an overkill or will it improves my temp?
i'm using the MCX462 with a 80mm Detla 68cfm HSF.
thank you.:D

What are your case temps now? Sure it might be overkill with the MCX462 already doing a wonderful job, but if it lowers your temps even more does it matter? I wouldn't really call it overkill, just good air-cooling if it does a decent job of lowering temps.

I really think you'd have a problem with the weight of a 120 on top of a 462, never mind that it is already bolted to the board. It's jsut too much torque. It might work, but it's already a good sink. How about just using a 92mm?

the MCX462 has dense fins requiring high pressure fans to be used on it. a 68CFM delta is ideal. using a lower presure 120mm fan will probably increase the temprtaure.

Mounting a 120mm fan near the heatsink will not do much because the air coming off the fins of the 120mm fan will be at an angle of 45degrees and the Delta's fins will not be able to 'catch' the air, this will result in the delta being starved of air and a temprature increase.

if, however your case cooling it on the weak side then a 120mm fan in the side of the case over the cpu will lower the temprature.

my cpu temp is 28 idle, 35 loaded.
what i'm thinking is to use a fan brackets from Zalman for the fan, thus "hanging" the fan above the HS....plus this will reduce the torque on the mobo from the HS...

Why don't you get a 120mm Delta from here:

190 CFM!!! Heh heh :p

You've got nice temps there. I don't really see a point to mounting a 120 if you don't have to, and they're still heavy fans. It could be quieter, but it doesn't seem worth it to me.
