Got my replacement drive from IBM!

I just got my replacement drive for the first 75GXP drive that I sent in for rma. It is actually the second replacement that they have sent me for my drive, because the first replacement was also faulty and wouldn't be sensed on post with a warm boot, only a cold boot. I called them up when the first replacement drive did this, and told the guy that I knew that they were having a bunch of problems with the 75GXP drives. I told him that I would rather have a 60GXP as a replacement as their reliability has been much better, and the guy said that he'd see what he could do. Airborne Express drove up around 11:30 today and delivered the drive, and when I opened it up, it was a brand new 120GXP, manufactured this month.:D :D It's a 20 gig drive instead of a 30 gig, like my 75GXP was, but I'm still very happy to get that damn dog replaced with a newer product drive. So anyone who is having troubles with their 75GXP, give them a call and see if they will work with you; you might have the same service as I did. I was nice and polite and didn't threaten to join the class-action suit on the 75GXP drives, and they gave me a decent upgrade, IMHO.:cool:

I would give them another call considering they gave you a 20 gig instead of a 30 gig. But that is just me. If you are happy then all is well.

They don't make a 30 gig drive in the 120GXP, just 20 gig and 40 gig and higher. The way I look at it, the drive they replaced was a year old and the drive they just sent me is brand spanking new, with a full 3 year warrantee. I'm just happy to get rid of that 75GXP; I still have 1 more in the process of being RMA'd because the second drive that I had bought to run in RAID0 died a few weeks ago and I'm waiting for it's replacement to show up in another week or so. One thing is for sure; the devil himself will be making snowmen before I put out another dime for IBM drives. It is costing me $11-12 each time I have to send 1 of their defective drives back.:mad:

Just got 1 of my 3 dead ibm drives back. They sent a 60 gig to replace the 45 gig gxp75. I'ven't pluged it in yet. :)

Happy you got a new drive, but I feel you got shafted.

Since you originally had a 30GB drive they should have sent you a 40GB drive not a 20GB drive!

If that had happened to me I would be ****ed and would be on the phone raising hell, but thats just me!

I RMA'd my 40 GIG 60 GXP and got my replacement last week. It has been sitting here waiting to be installed when I came across this thread. I looked up the part number on IBM's site and low and behold I am holding a brand new 40 GIG 120GXP manufactured 2/02!!! Would have never known if I did not hop on to this thread!! Make those 75GXP and 60GXP drives fail!! You'll get 120GXP's!! I didn't ask for this drive either, maybe they are only sending these drives out.

Well, I got an update on my hard drive situation to post today. I got my replacement drive for my other failed 30 gig 75GXP in this afternoon and it is also a 120GXP, but it is a 40 gig hard drive, also brand new. So I've ended up with the same amount of storage that I've sent in for RMA, just not the same size hard drives like before. I'm not planning to go back with RAID this time, so it's no problem having 2 different sized hard drives. I believe that I'll use the 40 gig in the rig in my sig labelled secondary box and the 20 gig in the AMD rig, which will soon be a 24/7 dedicated Folding rig.

I had IBM last spring. 45Gb of that selfdestructing series. It lasted about 4 months after it died. I lost almost all "###¤" data. After going to local retailer they send failed hdd to importer and the importer sent me (after 2weeks...) back WHAT?? a new 45Gb of that failing series.

I decided not to use that faulty series once again. (LUCKY I had read from internet that others have failing drives too). I brought the new drive back to local retailer and I got about 2/3 of my money back... So I lost like my data, time, money.

IBM, retailer nor importer never admitted that they had a series of faulty drives. I won't buy a new IBM. I won't use that local retailer anymore either. Now I got a raid-1 array of 2x SAMSUNG) :D :) 40Gb drives on Promise Fasttrak66. They're only 5400rpm, but at least I haven't had any problems with them.

Just an update. All of my failed drives, 3 in total have been rmaed and replaced with the gxp120 line drives.

Had 45 gig gxp 75 replaced with 61 gig gxp 120
had 2x20gig gxp 75 replaced with 2x20gig gxp 120's.

Should be interesting to see how long these drives last. From what i've heard, the 120 line is a lot better....but it's still early days.

wow cool 120 GXP drives in exchange for 60 GXP's!!! I think I will put my 40gig 60GXP drive in the oven for a couple of hours then send it back :D

Ok im a bit woried. I have a raid 5 set with 3 ibm 60 gxps I have 2 23 cfm fans blowing on to them so there not to hot.
Ive had one drive disapear for a few minutes causing the array to rebiuld. Could this be failing what sort of case tempsa r you runing at? will keeping them cool keep um alive ??? my case temp is about 20*c but air is 18-19

I've had this thing for quite some time now and haven't had a problem with it. Has August 2000 on it. Its been working great as a main drive and I am starting to worry that this thing will fail on me sooner or later ::Knocks on wood:: ...got a 42.5cfm Sunon fan blowing on it to help keep it cool.
