My buddy has a P 166MMX, I just updated his OS to Win 98SE. Give me y'alls best tricks for making it [a bit] better, he has 64MB of SDRAM [for some reason, it marks 32/32 even if we have 64/64 sticks?]... This thread is for both software/hardware tweeks... Thank Y'all, and Have a Nice Day =]

I've had the same problem on an older board before after I put more RAM in and it doesn't show up. Turned out I didn't have it seated down in the slot good enough. Those P-166 chips ran at 2.5X66, so use some good thermal paste, then slap the best heatsink and fan on it that you have laying around. After that's installed, move the jumper from 2.5X to 3X and run it at 200 MHz. Optimize Windows so nothing is running in the background and don't use any custom schemes (like animated cursors and stuff like that) because the reduces system resources. Those older machines are really better suited for Win95. They'll run Win98, but it'll be slow.

its always my dream to have one of those p166mmx.....

I hear you can easily get 233 out of them.

that's an easy a 40% OC, not too shabby.

Probably don't on a Packard Bell... I doubt there are any jumpers on it..

Thats exactly what I did with my packard hell by moving the multiplier to 3.5 too bad the mobo didnt have higher multipliers or a 75MHz fsb :(

I got a p1 166mmx to upgrade a Cyrix 150+ (120mhz, about the speed of a 486dx4 100mhz) and it ran 266mhz right out of the box in the noname mobo I had... Man that thing was fast, kicked the crap (and then some, then more) out of the Cyrix chip.
Forget the voltage, but it was only .05,.1 or so up from default with retail heatsink and one of them radioshack 12v 9cfm blowers.
And yes, it was unlocked :D
If I remember right, (and I bet I don't) it was right as Intel started locking cpus.

I bet you could get a random Super7 board off pricewatch for cheap (Looks like they start @ $30-40)or you could go down to a used pc shop and I'm sure you could get one for a bit less...

Good luck!

nice :) but a socket7 board(not the super) verson cost only like $15 and still supports 200 to 300MHz via a 66 to 83fsb. also the pentium2's are even more powerful, MHz per MHz :) and that cyrix 150+ running 120MHz is actually as fast as a 90MHz pentium, which beats any 486!!!!!!!!

The fpu on the P1XX+ Cyrix chips, is very poor at best... 486dx4 100 pulled faster framerates in q1, and thats where it really counts (5 years ago) in my book :)

I beleive ya! cyrix cpus were never made for gaming. even the amd k6 series kicked the cyrix ass! someone had a 333 cyrix(probably a 266MHz in true MHz) and a 200 pentium beat it! however its good in non-fpu stuff

if you look at the sandra scores a Cyrix III 667 gets kicked around by a Celly 266 and the same speed as a P 233MMX

The only thing the Cyrix chips are good for is just Windows.
MY first pc was a Cyrix 266 GXm cpu, Stuck a V3 in it and it ran tribes 1 okay...but when I got a K6-2 500....I was in heaven.
I would though, like to find another socket 7 mobo that supports it, Its kinda sintimental to me because I used to stay up till 7am playing the original Starsiege on it...would make a good 24/7 folding machine. I still got the cpu but my dad did something to its original motherboard and it refueses to boot.
