Defiant
:sly:
Who wants to build a computer? I sure do. So lets begin.
I seen the Silverstone Raven RV-02E when I was working on my last build, but the timing was not right for it then, so I ended with something a bit different... a bit Xsessive. (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=677442)
Then they released the white one and I could not contain the monster within. I snatched up one of the white Ravens quickly and tucked it into a corner with plans to save it for a future project when the 2011 chip finally comes out.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/100_0708.jpg
Unfortunately for me my hidden monster, lets call him Frank for ease of conversation, has an appetite that could win hot do eating contests for breakfast... and lunch, possibly dinner and a midnight snack as well.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/100_0736.jpg
With the case safe within my possession I didn't have to worry about where I would be putting my next build, only what will be inside of it. So I have probably the best air cooling case on current market and I just cant help myself, I think I will defy that purpose and stuff it full of water cooled goodness. Oh yes, Defiant I am :screwy:
With my previous experience with liquid cooling Frank just about took everything he could manage to beg, borrow, steal and swallow then stick it in a computer case. This time I would bee needing some help to be able to complete this build in a more timely fashion and a bit higher level of goodness. With a bit of effort I was fortunate enough to gain my first two sponsors ever. BitsPower and EK Water Blocks
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/BPbox.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/EK%20MDPCx/EKFamily.jpg
With BitsPower and EK helping out with this project it let me free up some funds and get a few more parts that I would be needing. I have become a bit thrifty to feed Frank's hunger. Through a little maneuvering with a GTX 460 Hawk I was able to pick up the MCP-655 pump I would be needing. A few hours of working through forums, reviews and personal opinions I selected the rest of the parts for the water cooling setup that I would be using.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/100_0728.jpg
First thing to do: Strip the case to it's bare nothings :D
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/100_0732.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2283.jpg
Trusty Blue tape in hand I taped the edges of the case up to protect against little dents, dings or chips.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2296-1.jpg
With a little Dremel work I fit the top 120mm radiator, fill port and attached the reservoir in the top of the case.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2311.jpg
I had not had the pleasure of single sleeving wires in a computer yet, so I thought that this build would require me to gain some more experience into the matter. Only problem was the sleeve I got was just not going to cut it.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2312.jpg
With some more research I came to the clear conclusion that the only sleeve that would suffice for this build would be from MDPC-X out of Germany. With the people at MDPC-X sleeve is not just a mod, it's an art form. With a two week delivery time it was all "hurry up and wait" for a while. The wait was worth it though.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/EK%20MDPCx/ShortAlieNEdition.jpg
The results speak for themselves.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2548.jpg
After sleeving up a NZXT Hale90 1000w power supply I had to let my poor hands rest for a few days. Ouch. Frank was happily napping that one off while I worked much overtime to pay for the next parts supply that I would be needing to progress. I hooked a friend of mine up with a new granite bar for the house and was able to get my next supply drop.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2539.jpg
With so much hardware at my fingertips it was hard to sleep, so I put in a few extra hours so I could get some work done. The first thing to do was get everything out of the boxes and ready for some bench testing.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/UD5.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2565.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2568.jpg
With a few spare parts I had laying around I was able to get a quick setup going and was able to test the new hardware to make sure I didn't have to RMA anything. With a little load testing and overclocking I was satisfied that everything was working proper.

The Setup
OK, so everything is confirmed to work and can handle overclocking at least to 4.8ghz. Next thing to do is strip it down to it's bare nekedness and get a little up-close and personal, if ya know what I mean. After removing the heatsink from the motherboard I was left feeling a little... empty.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/strippedUD5.jpg
To fill the void I broke out the sexyness of the EK kind.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/EK%20MDPCx/EKUD7.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/EK%20MDPCx/UD7Shine.jpg
Void properly filled ;)
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/UD7kit.jpg
The CPU block is also quite nice.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/EK%20MDPCx/EKHF.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/EK%20MDPCx/HFSHINE.jpg
I think they were made for each other
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/CPUin.jpg
All righty then. Looking good, feeling good. It has good weight, weight is sign of reliability. If it does not work... you can always hit him with it. I mounted the board in the case and set up a temporary loop so that I could at least play with the new toy.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/fitted.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/tubed.jpg
My friend is also a machinist so he was able to mill me out some sweet new mounts for reservoir. They are a perfect fit. Not too bad for the first one-offs he has made for me.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/ResMounts.jpg
With everything in place it was time for a little bit of leak testing, which revealed a leak. The EK reservoir was leaking from the cap, EK sent me a couple of sets of o-rings and problem fixxed
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/IMG_2629.jpg
After about a day and a half of leak testing I felt confident that there were no other leaks in the system.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/pump.jpg
So that is the current progress on my new project, Defiant. I have a whole bunch of small pieces to design and implement within the case, but now that I have most of the hardware I have some new ideas to work with and get this build a bit more flash to it. Might change the tube to white and the fluid to a light blue so that it is not so distracting inside the case. Once I am able to get the video card in I will be changing the loop around a bit to make it a bit more efficient and cleaner inside. This computer is shaping up nicely and can hardly wait until it is finished.
After a short session of overclocking I was able to put up a nice clock to :D
5.3ghz @ 1.6vcore (http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1907156)

Thanks, there is still a huge amount of work to be done. I think I might have too much fun building these things

The case is surprisingly resistant to collecting dirt and dust. A damp cloth is all I have used so far to clean up after myself. I'll be able to tell more once I get the build done and have time to work with it.

Looking very nice. Personally I would have chosen a blue color instead of the green, but that's just me. I think blue and white go nice together :D
But, regardless of my personal color choices vs. yours, the build definitely looks nice and clean :)

Thanks Jon, I'm actually thinking I am going to change the coolant to a light blue color and redo the tube with some white instead. Once I get the video card into the loop it will clean up the inside a bit.

Thats awesome. I have been searching for a new case, but I am bit weary to get a white one, even though they have the tendency to look the best. Anyways, case is looking great man.

Thanks, I would recommend this one, except you will not be able to get it from a retailer now. I think they are sold out everywhere. might be able to pick one up off of ebay or something.

Looking really good so far! I would prefer just distilled and a silver coil to keep the clear water, the green doesn't do it for me with the white/black theme.

Well you got lucky. I just checked it again to triple check I had the right case and low and behold.
OUT OF STOCK.

i see this, but it is listed back on their site. I have a feeling that they will be releasing more of them. I hate buying limited edition stuff to find out that they decided to make it not limited.
So... how does one go about getting sponsored by companies?
ShortAlieN
07-18-11, 02:40 PM
lots of back and forth. emails. weekly updates. previous build experience.
I think I got lucky and was able to deal with some good people. As many companies as I emailed compared to the responses I got... I consider myself very lucky to get the two sponsors I did, and am very grateful for it.
Now if I could just find one to hook me up with a video card ...

Past that, the more original your build is the better. Take for instance these guys that do really custom desk work that houses their PCs. Many sponsers love that as they know it's always a hot topic on computer forums and it gives them a lot of free advertising.

Well I got the power supply back together. After removing some unnecessary hardwired lines... well ones that are also modular. I think they expect you to power a ton of hardware with this thing so I have high hopes for it. I mostly hope that it doesnt fail... but it looks good. :D

Thanks! Currently my camera is out of commission, I did not know that the lens could go bad... but it did and had to send it in. I have a crappy little camera, but it takes horrible pictures. Not sure when I will get my other lens back, but it could take up to four weeks.
Till then I will take some shots with the crappy camera when I get any major mod done. Working on painting this weekend, oh and got a newish manual mill in the garage now and that should be hooked up this weekend or early next week. depends on what we find out with the power... might need three phase :bang head:
Anyway I'll get some updates in soonish :D

OK, so I promise I have been doing something other than playing... mostly work actually :(
If it has not been on the computer, it's mostly been on the new place and of course regular work, the kind I actually get overworked and underpaid for.
The new garage has slowly been turning into a pretty good workshop, but it's a slow and expensive process. Hence the slow proceedings on this project. But no more! I need mah geek time.
Unfortunately though my stoopid camera lens is still not back, but hopefully it will be here in time for the weekend. This weekend is shaping up to be a good one, as long as everything arrives according to plan. In preparation I got the radiators and fan painted up.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/100_2398.jpg
I made sure to mask off the fins on the radiators so that paint does not inhibit the cooling more than I already have.

I got the NZXT power supply in, but have not gotten the rest of the cable sleeve done. One of the weekend projects.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/raven3.jpg
I removed all the blocks from the motherboard when I drained the system. With the stock heatsinks back in place I can make sure to test everything when I receive it.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2/FatMaN007/Raven%20June%202011/raven2.jpg
Well the crappy camera died and I dont really feel like buying more batteries for it. I was unable to get all the pictures taken that I wanted and am unable to show you some of the other things that I have done. If all goes according to plan, which it never does, I should have a grip of new stuff to work with by this weekend. As I type this there should be a few packages in route to me. Included in these packages are a GPU, more sleeve, hopefully a camera lens, coolant and some fresh white tube to get everything in proper working order.
It's going to be a busy weekend between all the work needed to get done on the computer I am also going to a Volbeat concert on Saturday. Sunday is pretty much dedicated to the computer though, if I'm still amongst the living :attn:

OK, well no good camera so I took a few shots with the crappy camera again. But I got it... "done" It will be getting a bit more work, but at least all the major parts are in under water and looking extra sexy. I'm very pleased with the progress so far. There are a few things that will be added later on, fan grills, probably some more acrylic to clean it up a bit and really need to get a SSD. I'm pretty much tapped out and tired of being broke so I will probably wait for a couple of months before I buy any more parts for this money pit. It feels good to get all the water cooled bits in place though. Its sooo quiet.
Made an acrylic mounting plate for the pump. It will get some finishing touches later on.

Beautiful build! I haven't seen something this clean, well thought-out and, well, stunning in a long time.
This is small because I don't want to take away from the compliment. It's a lovely build and deserves absolute kudos. If you want a tiny (really small) bit of constructive criticism, I'd go with distilled + biocide for the liquid in your loop. You have this awesome black & white contrast going on that you obviously worked very hard to get, but then there's a res with green liquid that throws the image off. If you swapped that out for nice, clean (better-cooling) distilled + biocide it would go from already absolutely awesome to perfect.

I'm actually waiting on some new coolant that is in development stages at this point. The coolant was clear to begin with.... but I added a little color to it(aka: didn't flush radiator well enough:shrug:). It does look a bit off, but will be changed eventually.

Those lights are blinding
Random thought on hokie's feedback combined with the above "bright lights" comment. What would green lights look like? Would they tone down the brightness while adding some green to match the fluid?
ShortAlieN
08-30-11, 03:11 PM
The lights are actually not really that bright, it's just how I took the pictures. They provide just enough light to see everything inside without disrupting what you are working on in the room.
This is about how the lights usually look. The crappy camera I have been using doesnt really take that good of pictures, but it gives you a good idea.

Thanks. I really like this case. The overall management of the interior is very welcome. It is turning out to be a nice setup. A few more mods should be coming hopefully before the end of the year.
Couple of decent shots :)

OK! Finally! :D
I hope everyone had a Happy and safe holiday season and New Year celebration.
After finding some things for this rig that were previously unavailable I was really happy to add to this thing. Though it was pretty nice before, it just didnt have the little Extra that I like to add in. The new radiator was the best thing that I couldn't wait for. It seemed like forever before anyone had them available, but as soon as they were I had to jump on one. Now when I first opened the box I was pretty scared that this beast was not going to tuck inside the bottom of the case, but fortunately for me... it fit perfect.

It took a little finesse and just a touch of mill work. I needed a drain port.

It turned out pretty well.

So that was the easy part... To get the radiator and fans in place in the bottom of the case I had to remove the filter boxes and do a little mod work on the hard drive cage. After trimming off two of the five drive slots I made a new aluminum plate that was a simple slip in and lock in place. I covered it with some white 3M Di-Noc, made a couple of acrylic panels and covered them with the white Di-Noc as well to give the interior a bit more a "personal" touch.

Now the painful part was having to re-do a whole bunch of my wiring. I made the top hard drive slot a Hot Swap bay so that drives can be easily changed out when needed and the other two are arranged for backup and program files. After some new sleeve and adding few new wires and removing a few old wires I was finally happy with what I had to work with behind the motherboard tray. It is not quite "perfect" but it is pretty damn good.

The thing that probably took the longest this time around was trying to figure out how to do the lighting in the case this time. I picked up some new white LED strips and placed them in some discrete locations. A little bit of sleeve finished them off, even though you dont get to see much of it.

And of course everything tucks inside and out of the way.
