Hi guys, i had a question. i'm nearly done building my rig and all i need is some ram.

I was thinking of adding 12GB of ram, but then though, why not just get 24GB as the DDR3 prices are low, and plus i won't be upgrading this thing for another 3-4 years, maybe even more.

I was thinking, am i able to use 3 kits of 2x4GB RAM such as this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313104 ram and get 24GB for ~$150 i know that is way overkill. i'll be doing a bit of photoshop here and there, but nothing serious.

I can't decide if i should get 3x Team Xtrem Dark 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 CAS 8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313104

Or 2x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 CAS 9 and overclock it to 1600 and lower Latency?

Or any other 24GB RAM combo that you might think is good for around $150.

I will be using a GA-X58A-UD7 Ver 2 and 920 overclocked to 4.2. as i doubt 24GB will allows me to reach 4.4 24/7 stable with all 6 sticks. The MB is under EK full cover WB and 920 is under HK 3.0 Nickel.

As long as the board supports that large of RAM modules (it should), it doesn't matter how you buy it. Kits are just matched sets of RAM, nothing more.

Why not spend $10 for a full set of "matched" stuff? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231359

The G.Skill is also 1.5v, where the Team is 1.65v. More room for voltage is probably better if you're going to overclock it.

oh wow, i guess i did not even think of looking at the full 24GB set as i just figured it would be too expensive for some reason... that price seems nice. hopefully Newegg sends out another 10% off all desktop ram coupon thing in the email soon.

Hi,

please do not using 3 kits to get 24GB, different kits may casue incompatible issues! every single kit need to pass numerous of compatible tests before selling to customer, that why the 24GB kit will be much expensive than 3 kits of 8GB!
Also, G.SKILL will not guarantee if you install 3 kits at the same time!

This.. ^^.

To add to that, a 'littlerev photoshop here and there' doesn't warrant 12gb none the less 24. You will likely have to raise vtt voltages as well to even support that. Even though its cheap, I still wouldn't waste my money on more than 12.
