yea, I built amd system folding 24h/d :) Now I've 2 comps 24h/d folding. (1.6Ghz tualatinceleron +0,7Ghz duron)

old (bought from different ppl):
soltek SL-75KAV-X,duron 700, 128mb pc133 ram (166,5€, aargh)
western digital 850mb,40x cd-rom (only 22 € together)
matrox g100 agp-graphics adapter (8,2€)
3com pci 590tpo nic (8,5€)

my own old:
halfbroke keyboard, some keys don't function (din->ps2)
lan-cable w/ rj45

new parts:
atx-case, (38.70€)
psu 350w (36.50€)
case fans
cpu-cooler+as3
1.44fdd, (14.30€)
mouse,ps2 (7.60€)
din-> ps2 converter for keyboard

total cost about 357€ (euros) w/ all stuff snailmailed to me or to the nearest post office.(when 1 USD = 0,8747, 357€ is about 312USD) I could have saved on cpu-cooling and case-cooling cause this duron700 doesn't overclock good. Soon I'm going to get that cd-rom off, cause I won't need it anymore.

So I challenge u all :) Build a CHEAPER folding machine.
Remember it has to be able to be competitive ín returning WUs too.

357€ / 700 Mhz = .510 € / 1 Mhz (~.466USD/1 Mhz) (pretty lousy price/performance ratio)

I'll propably upgrade to duron 1200 (106€) and get 30€ from d700

the price/performance would be 433€ / 1200Mhz = .361€ / 1Mhz (~.316USD/ 1 Mhz)

those ratios for AMD cpu (if u build Intel system, that would need multipliers to count folding power...)

IMHO, this could be one neat way to count folding power cost effiency rather than aiming to o/c single cpu @ higher Mhz... (propably a succesfull enough o/c, would get the ratio better)

I might take you up on that challenge. I have a Duron 650 sitting around somewhere, getting a free mobo and 8meg vcard. I should be able to get a basic rig running for under £150 :D

I put a 800 Mhz dunron on for 225$ But All I had to buy was the CPU, MB, Memory, case, and HSF. This was a few months ago.

I did 3 athlons at 1.4 for about $700US, give or take $20. :) but that was in sept when they were almost giving RAM away which reduced costs dramatically. I didn't buy any cases either. Used HD's and vid cards also brought down costs. The price includes a new 5 port switch to add everything to the network.

So, Ploaf, How many rigs you got up?

Dude, I added 2 duron 1 ghz (before ocing) machines for just $114.75 each, $229.50 total, tax included. Beat that. (Yeah, I know I've told this story before in at least 2 other threads. But, damn, I'm pretty happy about it. :D )

Of course, I had EVERYTHING else I needed already, so it may technically not count. But you can't beat it with a stick.

5 including a laptop. Had 6, gave one away. :D

The laptop doesn't do this full time though.

Jeff - That looks like a winner. :D I had some RAM and used the CDROM and floppy that I already had to set them up. Nic was built in to 2 of the systems and I use the same keyboard/mouse for both.

Here's pic of 2 systems nailed to the back corner of the basement wall. Be prepared for the mess you are about to see. The one on the right doubles as a server. :) Everything else has a case and those are the only 2 left without a case.

if your looking to buy full machines for cheap. cases and hard drive computergeeks has some sweet deals.

celeron 700 complete system $274
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GENXE763

they have a celeron 800 package for $299

you could always gut the insides and use the case, hd, dvd drive, ect.

and ploaf why havent i seen that picture in the case mods section. i might just have to post it on the website.

I was almost standing on my head trying figure out the perspective in the pic. The nailed to the wall never came through. Ingenious way to get the job done Ploaf. Unfortunately I'd get evicted going that route.:D There's the proof guys. Puts a whole new meaning to folding on the cheap.

Now the bad part. There are 4 systems, 1 hub, 1 water softener plugged into the same power strip that plugs in to the wall via an extension cord. The power strip and hub are attached to those sticks that are coming up on both sides. The sticks were nailed to the wall with a .22 calibre hammer. ;)

Whatever it takes! Gotta hand it to ya, thats cool! I'm actually workin on buildin one, but I'm holdin out to try and go as full blown as I can. You know, case, etc... my luck, if I did something like that, I'd come home from work one day and something like my house burned down cause the d__n cat was playin w/ the wires or one of the kids got curious. nuf said!
Fold on!

I guess one could say you aren't into "case modding"... :p

Had 256 meg pc133 bought when it was cheap, but then ram got so cheap I bought 2 512 meg pc133s @ $45 each, so wasn't using the 256. Stole 1 128 pc100 from the k6-2/450 rig. Took a pent 166 out of a 145 watt box and put the 450 in that box. Took a pent 200 out of a 200 watt box and put one duron in it. The 450 was in a 300 watt box - put the other duron in it. Had hard drives, cd drives, mice, keyboards, that I stole out of old computers that I got cheap from auctions. I also got a palet of 24 monitors for $63 from that auction - about $3 each. Some were bad and some way old, like 16 color, but enough work that it was well worth it.

P, you are bad to the bone!!! :D I love it. We talk about that at work 'cause 1 guy claims to have done it. Cooling is not nearly as much of a problem with no case. Personally, I just leave the sides off of my cases. Saves money on fans, and on electricity to, come to think of it.

Now, if some one could just donate you 2 cases, and me a 400 watt power supply, ...

Told ya it was scary :D
I had to do something and it was cheaper, faster, and easier than getting cases.

Now that water cooling thing. I may do that and I promise that it will look much better than that. ;)

Cool
when 1£ = 0,61170€ and you're using 150£, your price/performance would be 245,2€/650Mhz = .377 € / 1 Mhz

When I get my new cpu my p/p ratio will be somewhere near .35€-.36€ / 1 Mhz

That will give really neat price/performance :D Yes not using case will reduce cost.

1 US$ = 0,8747 €... 700US$ = 800,3€

800,3€ / (3x1400)Mhz = .191€ / 1 Mhz

1USD = 0,8747 €, 225$ = 257,2€

257,2€ / 800Mhz = .32€ / 1 Mhz, good :)

299x (1/0,8747)=341,8€

I use .8 multiplier for counting celeron power compared to amd (dunno if it's right)

.8x800Mhz= 640 "amd"Mhz

341,8€ / 640Mhz = ,534€ / 1 Mhz, pretty expensive... (though that's fast and easy to buy a complete system)

$99.00
one k7s5a motherboard
one 1 ghz morgan duron

$6.99
one thermaltake volcano 5 hsf

105.99 * 8.25% tax = $8.74
105.00 + 8.74 = $114.73

Yeah, he so radically modded the case that he wound up cutting it all away. :)

P.S., I recommend the fans hanging in the air blowing on the mobos. :)

Tax is only 8.25% in the US!
VAT is 17.5% in the UK!

That's a thought althought the chipsets are cool and the CPU's are running 39C full load. :D

Oh. Sales tax in Ohio is 5% or something. If you order from out of state the store won't collect the sales tax, but you are supposed to tell the state that you ordered from out of state and pay the tax anyway.

Yes, that is state and local sales tax together. Income tax is another topic altogether. Your taxed when you earn it, and taxed when you spend it.

Yeah, you probably don't need them with THAT setup. :D But it really does make a difference for me even with the case sides off.

That's the way it is here, too. You're supposed to but it sure is easy to forget to do that.

Yeah, income tax here is either 0% (in full time education or on benefits), or 20% (the 'low' rate :D) to 40%. Used to be up to 70%!
