I.M.O.G.

In the future, post them in frontpage discussion then contact me or mdcomp - we'll move them into Alt OS leaving a permanent redirect. This way, frontpage discussion has the full list of articles, but the discussion stays within the proper forums. Regardless, thanks for posting them up - I just moved them around to get the redirects there and we are all set!

I.M.O.G.
11-27-09, 09:52 PM
Has anyone else expressed interest in writing also? You shouldn't have to do everything yourself! mbentley has written before, maybe he'd be interested again? Also, unseenmenace came out of hiding and he is planning to write something, he may need a followup.

Also...

Your overclockers.com Editor account has been created. Let me know if you have any trouble logging in, or any questions. A guide explaining how the workflow will work is forthcoming - trying to get everyone handling all content within wordpress as soon as possible.

Bulldozer, nice. Looking forward to seeing how this is shaping up, should only be a few months away last I heard. Was just looking to review this and get it ready for tomorrow, glad to see its published already - reading now. :)

Corrected spelling on nordic hardware (not nortic), just try to pay attention when citing other sites to get the name correct. Only other correction was classification - articles need to have one top level selection. News, reviews, howtos, editorials - its ok to have a couple sublevels, such as processors and motherboards, but be sure to select one of the top levels also. The top level choice determines the color of the date balloon, and where the article will be found for anyone clicking on the main navigation bar at the top of the site.

This is definitely news worthy: ASUS First to Provide AM3+ CPU Ready Solution for Current AM3 and Future AM3+ Motherboards (http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/AM3_PLUS_Ready/) (emphasis added). This was news to me because rumors that have been around for quite a while said BD will have a different physical socket. This is, of course, great news for anyone with a strong current AMD board.

I have reached out to several people and I thought I had latched onto some articles but that seems to have fallen through.

I just scored the Natty Beta dvd last night its installing right now then I will get something out in the way of initial looks

Down the road I am going to do some writing about Matt's project revival but I dont think there is much to write about right now on that front, though its getting close.

Also upcoming I am going to do a comparison of a 320gig laptop mechanical to an SSD. I am just waiting on the Intel 320's to come out.

Finally I am in the midst of doing several certs so I might attempt some sort of "study guide". Currently undertaking LPIC, Ubuntu and Suse certs

So I haven't forgotten about this, I just havent seen a huge amount going on in the AltOS scene for a while. Save for the ipad2 which I dont have and dont really want to buy
(I may also do a gnome vs unity thing)

Goina bump myself up,

I started a draft for my reflexions on the certifications I have taken.

As well I am going to post an updated HowTo for triple monitors with Nvidia because, for me at least, it wasn't straight forward.

I have also reached out to a few members regarding article ideas. Now that my wedding is over, and my certs are done and I have completed a move (and passed the probation period on a new job) I am going to try and get some content out there

Updated the upcoming articles. I am going to sit down and do a quick Glade/Python Tutorial this weekend. I have already started taking screen shots. I just have to clear some time for that

Merged Alt OS & News into this thread. This will help consolidate stuff so we don't miss things.

So on the news end of things, how should news articles be posted?

I'm on the gigabyte vendor/review/tech site email list and get stuff (like about the G1.Something 2 X79 board this morning) that makes decent news from time to time, if y'all want I can post it on the overclockers frontpage.
Do I just make a normal article with it and tag it as news?

I'm a n00b here :D

Not to be a total pest, but..... bump for the question.
I imagine I'm not the only one on said list, but I do run into news that I don't see on OCF sometimes.

Sorry, missed that. Yea, if you see news you want up, just post it in wordpress then email us and we'll get to it ASAP. The news protocol is similar to pretty much anybody (generally speaking) - just say what it is and why it's important to our readers, post pics credited as appropriate then link to the source at the end. If it's from you and not another site of course you don't link to the source. :p

I am resurrecting this post. I have been super negligent lately. I actually have the material sorted for the 3 listed articles under the Upcoming Articles heading.

I have actually started research and contacting a few of these game dev's for some direct input on how they would describe their games.

I need to take a week off work just to catch up with all the writing i want to do!

I just thought I would post an update

I have received replies from the following companies so far:

inXile (Wasteland 2 (http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/blog/), interview)
GuysFromAndromeda (SpaceVenture (http://guysfromandromeda.com/aboutspaceventure/), interview)
Obsidian (Project Eternity (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity), Interview.... interesting note Feargus is stranger to our forums!)
Cliffhanger Productions (ShadowRun Online (http://www.shadowrun.com/shadowrun-universe/shadowrun-online), responded to questions)
Gamesfoundry (Folk Tale (http://www.gamesfoundry.com/), emails and press page)
SFBGames (Detective Grimoire (http://detectivegrimoire.com/), responded to questions)
MightyRabbitStudios (Saturday Morning RPG (http://www.mightyrabbitstudios.com/?page_id=48), responded to questions)
FTLGame (FTL (http://www.ftlgame.com/), Email)

Ya it is turning into more work that I anticipated, though in a good way.

I am going to have to split this over a few days I think. Like 2 or 3 a week for a couple of weeks. I am still holding out hope that the 6 other companies I contacted will also answer some questions

Stratus_ss
09-27-12, 11:56 AM
The guys from FTL emailed me back so they have been added to the list.

Based on the responses, I am going to have to break this into at least a 4 parter

Bobnova
09-27-12, 12:03 PM
FTL is a wonderful game.
I've been playing it a lot, definitely worth the crazy-low price.

If you want to add an interesting independent game, try Dwarf Fortress on for size.
I have no idea whether the guy who writes it has enough time to talk to the press, but It's another wonderful game and it's free. He subsists off of donations.

Stratus_ss
09-27-12, 06:11 PM
Thanks for the suggestion!

I am aware of Dwarf Fortress though it does not fit into the scope of this particular series as I am focusing on Linux and Kickstarter projects specifically.

Bobnova
09-27-12, 06:27 PM
Aha, good reason. DF does Linux happily enough, Kickstarter less so.

Touched base with several of the devs recently. Still awaiting responses from some companies.

I am hot-to-trot on getting this out there but I am constrained by the companies who are generously giving me their time

I could use a proof reader? Can someone help me with that?

hokiealumnus
10-05-12, 02:58 PM
Absolutely; if it's in wordpress I'll subscribe the editors then put out the call.

Stratus_ss
10-05-12, 03:13 PM
Its in the draft section in word press under posts

EDIT: It should be noted that I have logos there which I have requested to use. So far I have only really heard from the Humble Indie guys giving me the ok. The Tux is creative commons/gpl so there should be no issue there

hokiealumnus

Part 2 will be in the pipes tonight or tomorow.

How long does it normally take for something to reach the front page?

Stratus_ss
10-09-12, 06:12 AM
Part 2 is up under the draft section.

I will be giving it the once over, then I will be requesting a proof reader.

Lets get these to the front page people! I am working my butt off on these

hokiealumnus

The last two days were items the NDA expired and they needed to go up when that happened. We publish after two editors have blessed each article. Please be patient, we'll get them up when we can. Thank you for your effort. Just know that we all also work our butts off on the front page constantly.

Stratus_ss
10-09-12, 08:48 AM
Fair enough, I didn't mean to seem impatient so much as I didn't know what to expect. Previously (albeit a while ago), it seems to me stuff got pushed through relatively quickly.

Hopefully I didn't ruffle too many feathers over my rash comments :D

I just would like to be able to have something up so that it validates my 'credentials' to some of the game developers who have been so generous to take time to answer, in great length, some of my questions.

I am just anxious to play it forward as it were

hokiealumnus
10-09-12, 08:51 AM
No problem, definitely understood. Hopefully someone can give it a look-see today and we can publish it tomorrow.

Stratus_ss
10-09-12, 06:29 PM
Thanks to some feedback by Earthdog, I have added 5 or 6 paragraphs and I will add a tiny bit more to the conclusion.

It had not occurred to me that people may not know what Kickstarter was. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Stratus_ss
10-10-12, 10:57 AM
I put part 2 up for proofing. I also changed the title of the series to better reflect the content

Additionally, I have a new part which I am addition, this will be an aside talking with the Unity 3D game engine developers. I decided on this because a large number of games coming down the pipe for Linux are using the Unity 3D engine so I thought it would be a good chance to get to know them a little better.

Thoughts? Comments?

Out of curiosity, is there any way to find out hit count on an article?

Bobnova
10-12-12, 10:22 PM
If you're logged into WP you'll see a header bar on the frontpage, part of it will be a bar graph display of total hits. Click that. It takes you here: http://www.overclockers.com/wp-admin/?page=stats
That will take you to a page that shows the top pages, if yours isn't listed click the Top Post and Pages link, it takes you here: http://www.overclockers.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats&view=postviews&numdays=7&blog=10868132
Find your article on the list and click the graph to the right of it, that will show all your articles stats.

Sure; any of the editors can put a link at the end for you.

No rush on this one. I appreciate it getting up whenever someone has the time!

Pushed Part 3 off tonight. This was originally part 1 before I bumped it. Aside from the intro nothing has changed.

Additionally I scratch off an unrelated game review from the last of articles I wanted to do. After this series is completed we won't need another game-related story for a while (unless demand shows otherwise)

I also have an article in the works from txus so I look forward to doing some editing their piece. It has no title and thats why it is not reflected on the first page of this thread yet

I was wondering what the general consensus is around quoting bits of previous articles published?

I am working on a Unity 3D article and I was thinking to pull in a few quotes from developers who have had specific comments about the game engine. However those thoughts were previously published in other articles.

Thoughts on that?

Evilsizer
11-03-12, 11:24 AM
dont see why it would be a problem.... if someone wanting to try their hand at game development, might take a look at it based on other comments. would make it easier for them, being that the comments from other dev's on the engine are in one article.

Hi guys,

I know that the Kickstarter series seems to be going on forever. Its almost done I promise. I am waiting on 1 more response (which claim to be 80% done) and then I will be ending with a compilation of smaller responses. So in total its looking to be a 7 part series.

Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to make these a success. Cheers

With the publishing of part 5, we are in the home stretch, two more articles left. The last one is going to be a bit challanging I think because I will have to give some thought to some sort of ending to the series

Thanks to all again!
