I for one am saddened by the direction that the Gnome devs have gone- Gnome3 just bothers me, and so XFCE seemed to be my next choice for desktop. Or, I might have had to abandon Debian and perhaps go with Centos or RHEL in order to continue using Gnome2.

There may be a viable fork in the works, see the link below:

I hope we see some nice GNOME2 forks - GNOME3 isn't anywhere near ready yet. It needs the option of a 'GNOME2 mode' like Win8 has a Win7-like mode ...

Alot of people are not happy with the gnome shell, and unity(Ubuntu users); they're havin' a bit of harsh words over the whole thing(see link) (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTAwMjY).

There is a survey whereby Gnome users can register their viewpoints on the matter:

2011 GNOME Survey (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=gnome_survey)

I'm leaving some thoughts with them in just a moment.

I setup FC-16 beta on my old A8N5X, discovered that using gnome-tweak tool (http://live.gnome.org/GnomeTweakTool) enables the user to fashion Gnome to a more traditional mode. I find this approach to be quite satisfactory; maybe in the future may try-out a gnome2 fork, if/when one becomes more mature.

I've been using XFCE and LXDE for a while now, I don't really see any point in the hugeness of KDE/GNOME.

There is no "point", just a personal preference. As for hugeness, on a modern computer there is no real necessity to be concerned over marginal resource usage differences in DEs.

Here's an interesting and possible useful link for those committed to hanging on to
gnome 2's familiar functionality & usefulness:

I prefer KDE for pretty-ness. LXDE for anything else.

GNOME can go to hell as far as I'm concerned, they just need a big APPLE logo at the bootscreen since they're clearly targetting functionally <snip> consumers.

Now don't hold back, tell us how you really feel. I'm guessing you must be:

1. talking about Gnome 3

2. have a clear prejudice and deep rooted disrespect for Mac users.

-just to put things in perspective, fully 100% of my computer repair clientele are Windows users, zero percent of the Mac users I know are having any problems at all.

Of course, the Linux users I know just take care of their own machines.
