View Full Version : Anyone know how to build an external HD?
I would like to build an external hard drive setup that would plug into a USB port rather than buying one. Does anyone know how to do this or how hard it would be?
Thanks

you can buy firewaire hardrives.
What they basicly are, is a normal hardrive in a hardrive bay that has been adapted to use firewire.
As for USB, i dont think thats posible, but i could be wrong

how about cut a slit in the side of your case and feed some long
IDE cables out there, and some long PSU cables, wrap it in some
colorful duck tape, and it might not look half bad.

just buy a thing for $50 that allows u to change it to an external drive
You can get a suitable case, which should allow you to plug it in.

I have an external bay that lets me connect any IDE drive to the parallel port.

Yeah, those are made by Backpack I think. We've got an external CDrom drive...
Basically all you need is to look for a USB ide drive enclosure.
Like this one perhaps? (http://aicmicro.com/productdetail.asp?id=1341)
Then add your own drive.
Check on pricewatch too, I think I saw a 10gb USB external drive for about 90 bucks. If you don't already have the drive you wish to make external, then that might be the best way to go.
Oh, and as was mentioned, you won't be winning any speed races.
I did however notice not just firewire but also USB2.0 external drives...

USB is good for mice, keyboards, scanners, and cheap digi cameras.
For External go Firewire at an A** kicking 400mbps
Or you could wait untill USB 2.0 gets big.
