View Full Version : DirectX ruined my setup

Well, I had to fdisk my system...every program I tried to run had gpf's...from IE to unreal, to ezcd creator...the only program that didnot crash was solitare.
My desktop even crashed....when you get a GPF just trying to start your computer it gets really ugly.
I will NEVER update DirectX again...every time I have updated it, I've had problems...from DX6 to DX8.1, and DX8.1 is the worst.
The only reason I updated it in the first place was to play a new game that insisted it needed it to run. From now on, if a game wants DX update, I will try to run it without, and if not I will just not play the game.
In my opinion, I think M$ just wants me to upgrade my OS, and that's not gonna happen. I'm still waiting for MS to make win2k usefull.
What really gets me is that I could not backup anything without M$ backup crashing, so I lost all my symantec subscriptions, e-mails and other important cookies left behind by the meltdown.
Direct3d Blows anyways, I have never had a D3d game run for longer than an hr b4 kiking me out to the desktop, OpenGL works five times better, but a lot of games out today will not support OpenGL.
Once again I am dissapointed with anything M$ has put out since 98se (which I like), which also why I will not try IE6.
Maybe this should go into gripes N moans, but I'm so P.O.ed at loosing all my hard work, e-mail contacts, etc.
The worst part is that if you do a search on the M$ K.B. for DX and windows crashing you will find nothing...at least I didn't.
I wish somebody would come up with a true windows killer.
I'm so sick of MS's failed attempts to put out an operating system that actualy works, and releasing them when they are obviously "not ready for the real world"
If you are running win98se and it seems stable, do not update directX, or you'll be sorry....I am:mad:

I have had a similar problem before, when I had windows Me. Try Windows XP, its a lot better than 98se.
Or, for an alternative to M$, try Linux.

I have been told that there is a sequence to DirectX. On my last reinstall, right after 98SE, I added the VIA drivers, then immediately Directx8.1. To this point, everything has worked smoothly.

I tried Gentus (abit) linux, but never got the mouse going, and after a little while somebody offerd me some money for the "experiment box", and so I got rid of it after loading windows back on it....so I'm still deciding which flavor to use...Gentus, or Debian?????
I have a 4g hdd lying around that I could boot from.

Stool, you mentioned Via drivers...funny, I found via agp drivers in my add/remove programs folder before I reformatted, and I have an intel chipset, and award bios. I dunno how they got there...strange:eek:

I would go for Debian - its a major distro, Gentus is not so well known.

Strange indeed. I can't think of any software progs that would install the VIA drivers.
