i don't think the socket 478 has clips. how can you "attack" the waterblock without using thermal adesive?

You should be able to find a waterblock that will attach using the retention clips that the Socket 478 uses. I generally don't recommend the use of thermal adhesive, though sometimes it is a must. I don't know where you can get them though... this might be better placed in the "Cooling" topic area, they might be able to help you more.
dangerden.com has clamps that use screws through the mobo.
They sandwich the waterblock to the socket and apply tight even pressure.
I'm using a Swiftech water block. It uses the same four holes around the socket that the standard heatsink does. It's arguably the best water cooling solution available for the P4.

I was just looking at those waterblocks kits for the socket 478 at Dangerden last night. If you already own a maze1C or maze2, you can order the brackets to convert it to a socket 478 compatible wb for $14.
DangerDen has the P4 Maze. Buy that. Also you never, never use adhensive on a CPU core.

Duct tape- is there anything it CAN'T do?? That stuff is great! Back in the old slot 1 days I used it not only for a thermal interface pad, but also to attach the cpu to my after market heatsink. A few good wraps always did the trick! I don't know if it's a trade secret or not, but duck tape seems to cure under heat just like some of the fancy thermal pads claim to for quite a bit more $$$. Yes sir, hard to go wrong with the old gray stuff ;)

See if we get this right duct tape over the contact area. How about around the waterblock and board or the case too? WOW! ,now thats really ?If you really want something sweet put 2 or 3 hairs as paste
I'm a big Danger Den fan. I have seven of their waterblocks and highly recommend them.
Regarding Swiftech and P4s, I got to listen to the Swiftech Quiet Power (http://www.swiftnets.com/QPOWER-H20.htm) watercooled case today. It's so quiet, I could not hear it over the telephone. If you don't want the hassle of building a watercooler, it's a slick option. I must be getting lazy in my old age because I believe I will use the Quiet Power for the Xeon dually I'm building.
