I just removed the bottom door where the hard drives are located. there is no bracket for the second hard drive. Upon opening it up i noticed one of the ram sticks stuck up at ~30 degree angle.

anyway would it be alright to install ssd without a bracket?

Yes it should be ok to install without the bracket, but I'd make it snug with some cardboard. ASUS's online parts store sells the brackets, well worth it, bought one myself. If the RAM doesnt sit flush, I'd send it back/RMA it.

ill send it back in january. they sold it as "open box" but theres a deep cut into the top of the laptop and its missing one of its feet... pisses me off. i have 45 days to mess around. im thinking of chancing it on the amazon.com 899 laptop.

yeah, id send it back if mine was in that shape. the G53JW is a pretty good laptop, GFX card is a slight notch down (you probably wouldnt even notice it) but the CPU is a huge upgrade. The Sandy Bride i7's turbo boost is leaps and bounds better than the 1st gen i7s (atleast for laptops).

regarding it being a notch down... dont you think the 8770 is being gimped by the 1.6 ghz processor thats in here now? turbo speed is only 2.8ghz

I don't think so... I notice a healthy increase in FPS for most games bumping the GPU/gDDR5 to 800/1100 vs the factory 700/1000. The only games I havent notice a major difference on are CPU intensive games, or games that are just poorly coded...

i decided on the g53 on amazon for 899. i registered a second amazon account and got another trial for their free 2 day shipping service... opted for next day shipping for only 9.99 :)

im hoping ot overclock the gpu to some degree. I have a Cooler Master Storm SF-19 Strikeforce laptop cooler... do you think illl be able to get anywhere with it?

would overclocking it bring the 460m to the level of performance of the 8770?

Sure, but you could always OC the 5870m too. Tbh, the 460m vs the 5870m is minimal difference, but the 5870m pulls ahead slightly in the end
