Ya know, I've been working around these for 3 years, and just today it hit me.......
This is a heater core for just about anything Caterpillar makes

is that core in the middle big enough to drop a fan or another cooling device down into it? That would be a sweet cooler!

The center hole is just a hair more thar 4" across, the whole unit is 7 5/8" across and 3 5/8" tall. it has rows of cores (5 in a row) 3/4" wide

thats sweet. just make a bottom for it, put a big fan on top. it would suck air from the sides through the fins and out the top
where could we get one of those things? I've thought about doing a water-cooling set-up for some time now, and that rad has peaked my interest!

No need for a bottom, just put a fan on each end, both blowing out.

I'll have to check at work, but any equipment with a cab (tractor, forklift, backhoe, some large lawn mowers), should come with something similar. Check your local equipent dealers. They come out of the cab heaters.
I'll check tomorrow and see if I can get a caterpillar part # and price
Hey, that is cool. Just mount it on top of your blowhole with the in/outs poking into the case. Add a nice chrome tophat from the hot rod air cleaners. Radiator without the shroud, and without loosing interior space.
That thing's probably got more surface area than any normal heater core, easily handling pelts....Great score!

If you guys want that core take the pic to your local cat dealer and if there parts guys are any good they will be able to identify it. Once you have pn take it to your Kenworth or Freigthliner dealer and they will most likely be able to get it for you cheaper. I used to work for KW and coulld buy the cat parts cheaper than Cats own service deptartment could although I don't remember any KWs that used this core. I'm heading over to Cat tommorow and will try to post the pn tommorow.
Derose do you have any of the numbers off of this piece? If you do I can run it in the Cat and KW parts data base, I still have access to them!

You probably won't find it for a KW, since this is off of a piece of heavy equipment and not an 18 wheeler. I have one of my parts guys looking up some part #s. Seems they come in different sizes too...... So I'm working on a complete list. hopefully in the next couple of days (by fri. latest) I'll post a complete database of PN's, sizes, and prices.
I don't want to discourage you but how do you want to position that radiator in the case?

what do you plan on doing with that thing?

if you cut the square end around a 120mm fan, you'd be the first person with a HeaterCorb :D . So many orbs and now you've got the one that actually performs!
That is seriously very nice. Heaterorb, sounds cool!

Actually my plan is to mount it directly on top of my case with the inlet/outlet tubes pinting down. My pump (another great find) a 600 gph 12v marine unit ($20.00 usd). will be positioned directly below it just inside the case. I'm working on modifying a squirrel cage fan to fit inside it and draw the air from inside the case through the top hole (what used to be my blow hole) and through the fins of the radiator. Since I'm using water to cool the GPU, CPU, and northbridge, the case temps should be fairly close to ambient temperature, not to mention the other 6 fans blowing air around the case. I am documenting all of this with my dig camera to hopefully write an article of my entire adventure.

Man, that thing is huge. But like all things by Cat, I bet it costs a bundle.

You'd be surprised at the number of parts that are available from KW that they don't use in any of their trucks. The KW dealer I worked for sold tons of heavy equip. parts and at a lot lower prices than Cat could do to volume.
Any way my point is it's worth checking out if you may be able to save 10-15% on the price.
This is deffinately and interesting find... I might have to see if I can find one of those at the auto store or something.. hmm... I like that thou.. that has some interesting things there...

HeaterOrb, mmmm yumm. :D
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL Man! I want one!
Heater Orb LOL! Better watch out they'll swipe your idea and put it into production at least then they'd have a product that's good for something other than a paperweight. Part numbers and prices please!

that thing is so sweet! how much are those? and i would say do the 2 120s wwithout the squair thing and dont have it sucking air from your case becuase it would heat up to much... unless you can keep it around room temp
i think heater orb sounds kinda funny but heatercorb sounds rite! and it was the first orbital name to be called..... hehe heatercorb cince its heatercore with the e replaced with a d ........hmmm that would be really nice to have...... and ill draw a pic of a good arangement...

make a stand have 2 120s blowing out like that one guy said and put 90degree elbows on the fittings so they go strait into the top of the case

excellent visuals, A+ ;)
That is a neat looking radiator but it is probably not the best. You want the air to flow through the radiator in a strait line, but with that it will have to make a 90 degree turn. This will cut down on the amount of air that you can pump through.

That is a very interesting design. Definitely not standard. I wonder how good it cools.
BUMP! (cause this thing ROCKS!) Yes it'd have to turn, but I have some small Aero Rotor type fans that suck as well as blow. I'd cap one end or put two fans sucking air from the center of the core.

How about you make your own fan for it??
fashion out some blades of some nature, and attach them to a pole wich will intern attach to a motor.
then just stick it through the center so the air is being blown out right through the vents.
front:
IIIIII
IIXII
IIIIII
the I's are the heatercorb and the x would be your fan
side:
___.....................
___............. ___
__________I.....I
___..............I __I <--- motor to drive fan
___......^..............
............ I..............
^...... rod for driving fan blades
I
heatercore
(had to space it out with periods cause otherwise the spaces got deleted)
kinda get what I'm talkin about?? I suck with the whole ascii thing.

Well, we searched Caterpillar, and they offer 5 different sizes, the one I have being the smallest and cheapest. But the price is $129. thats my cost (dealer). suggested retail is $186. After some more checking, the aftermarket companys (SMH and Totalsource) don't carry them. Suggestions from my parts department, any tractor with a cab is going to use this same design. If anyone lives near a tractor dealer, pls stop and ask. I'm going to look for one here in Denver. There should be an outlet for these fairly cheap($40 range)

What you need for that is a fan with the same diameter as the whole thing, like a room fan or a very small commercial box fan.
What you need for a fan is one of these. No blades this little monster pulls about 500 CFM. The cup on the fan was a temp fix to collect water. The case is stainless steel as well as the rotor. 3500 rpm - 1/70th HP BB very quiet running. The hole where air is drawn in is at the bottom it's opening is 4 inches.
