View Full Version : Settings to not get Cuda units?

Hey guys, it's been a while since I ran Seti, but with the Rosetta server down I wanted to get some Seti work for my laptop while here at work. But, the problem I am having is that the server is only sending me Cuda units, which I don't think the drivers I have installed at present work properly with. They just sit there and nothing gets worked on. Downloading updated drivers is non-workable on this slow, shared sat connection here at the rig and the drivers are a 150 mb download. Anyway, is there some way to get this stupid BOINC client to not try using the gpu on my laptop and not download Cuda work, since I can't process them. And since this is a laptop, I wouldn't feel comfortable running Cuda on the gpu anyways, since I need this laptop for work and don't want to burn up the gpu for Berkeley.:( I am using the 6.10.58 version of the client, since I absolutely can't stand the newer versions that they "improved" the look by changing the interface around. I looked at the preferences settings in the client and on the server side, but don't see any way to switch off getting Cuda work. :(

The gpu handling of the client is a non-issue with Rosetta, since there is no gpu client on that project. But it's a major impediment to me helping out for Seti.

Anyways, any help you can give me would be much appreciated. :)

Interesting question.

Is it the base BOINC Client or the Lunatics Optimization that asks if you want to use your GPU.......

Editing the app_info.xml file would be another option....

Even easier:

Open BOINC manager in advanced view, Activity tab, use GPU Never.

That should do it nicely.

It was the base client at the time I posted this. After I posted this I remembered the Lunatics optimizations and downloaded and installed them.

That was already set that way to start with. The client or server side was ignoring this setting too.

Since installing the Lunatics optimizations, my laptop got some regular cpu type work units so all looks to be good for now. I went and aborted all the Cuda units my laptop got so they could be recycled to someone who has drivers set up to process them. Checking the messages tab, the client hasn't drawn any more Cuda units since I installed the Lunatics either, so maybe it won't get more in the future. But I do have it crunching some Seti work now. Too bad I'm not home where I could have set all my home systems to get some Seti units while Rosetta is down too. I have 4 machines probably doing nothing now but burning electricity because Rosetta looks to have had a big server crash. :(

Remote desktop?

Never bothered to check on how to do that. Plus, 3 of the systems are Win7 Home Premium, which I don't think have it (not sure though).

RealVNC is another good option:
http://realvnc.com/vnc/how.html

They even have a free version for non-commercial use.

Remote desktop is good if you need something that does not require installing on the company machine where you might not have permissions, it is a built in windows application present in the Pro version of XP and newer machines. The remote machine needs to have a setting changed to allow remote connections.

I use https://secure.logmein.com/ to check on my headless host. It's easy as cake, and it's free. Also, if your running CUDA apps on the remote computer, using Microsoft's remote desktop software will cause them to crash. It's a known problem.

To run remote desktop or RealVNC (which I have used before on the LAN at the house, BTW), I guess I would have to set up static IP addresses for the systems, right? Because this won't be local at all to my DSL service at the house. I have them running DHCP on my router at present. But I do have a static IP address for my DSL service, so I guess that should help configuring. I've never set up a WAN before.
