Question: How much did they charge you to come and hook it up?

I know here in the ATL a particular phone company will charge you $200 to come out and setup your DSL or you just pay for the service ($50) to hook it up yourself

Congrats on the cable. In my area its like installed for $20 and the monthly bill is $40 if you have basic cable and $50 if you dont.

its free installation, $35 a month because im a cable customer and i bought my own modem. the modem i got will do 42.88 mb/s down and 11mb/s up, even though the company only supports 3 mb/s down and like 1.5 up

and another plus, it turns out that i can use my hub with this stuff..WOOHOO, but i plan on getting a router/switch when i get some more money

Heheh I just got my cable broadband on the 12th.. optimum Online.. It's nice :) lol I neeed the extra speed.. OOL as we call it sets their cap at 10mbps down/1 Mbps/Up

the last speed test I did I got this..

Also forgot to say it's $39.95 per month...It used to be $29.99 :( but anyway I only pay a 1 time start up of $64.95.. If I drop the service (Which I'm not) I keep the modem..Which is btw the Motorola SurfBoard 4100.

I also have OOL, but on DSL reports I get 4000/1000Kb/s ,,, u got 7000/900Kb/s
How u gettin that extra 3000KB/s down?

btw if u have the "optimum family package" for the tv with them it's 30 and not 40, wich i pay =)

It's so ez I dunno y they charge, I wouldn't let em toch my comp anyway :P
They charged me 100bux for the SB3100 and a 10/100 nic card, when the modem was like $300 back then :D

Which Modem do you Have? If you have the Motorola surf Board 4100 their is a Firmware update for it... Only thing..If you want it you have to go over to www.Dslreports.com then go to the Optimum Online fourm..then go to the thread asking for firmware updates.. If you have a SB 4100 check your firmware version here

I'm not sure if thats the latest version..but you can check over at dslr thread that i gave the link up above.. Also I should Note these firmware upgades are only for people on the Optimum Online network.. Btw this is what the speeds looked like 5 min after getting OOL.

That Firmware did wonders :) I'm downloading linux Mandrake now :) I finnished the 648Mb file in 16 min & 47 Sec.... not bad

It's hard to max this connection out....
I usly only hit like 100-300KB/s on normal site downloads...
But off my friends t3 from work at 4am I was hitin 700KB/s!!:D

I'll have 3 ppl uploadin from me and be d/lin like 8 files at a total of 500KB/s :P

what kind of d/l software do you guys use? ive tried morpheus, but it sucks, and then i use Direct Connect right now, but its being dumb, and wont work, soo what do you all suggest...ive used kazaa (dont like spyware though), winmx, limewire....so what now??

now... OOL does 7000/1000Kbs/ or 875/125KB/s
Now would u rather pay 4 or 500bux a month for t1 or 30bux for OOL? :D
But don't get my wrong t1 is on a dedicated line and is alot stabler and the bandwidth is more canstant

My ISP only gives me 640Kbps down and 128Kbps up. :( :( :( :( I could get up to 1.5mbps but its waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy too expensive ( I don't remember now but I think its $100 + . They are craaaaaaaaazzzyyyy).Ohhh how much I envy your speeds.......
