Run some water through it under pressure, and if it doesn't leak it should be okay.

Why would he want to spend 75 to 80 bucks for a heater core when he can buy one already modded with 1/2" barbs for less than 50, new? It sounds like he is trying to watercool on a low budget and a 50-80 dollar rad is too much. I've heard of acceptable heater cores running for around 20-30 at the parts stores though. As for myself; I'd be kind of leery trusting a heater core in my boxen that was pulled out of a junked car, with all the potential rust problems in the core. I think that if you are going to watercool, do it right and use new stuff in the cooling loop, but that is just my opinion.

Just look for the kind that looks just like the large one that cools the engine (only smaller). It will have small tanks on each end. You can scratch the coating off of the side edge (not the endtanks) to see if it's copper too, that would be even better.

The kind that have a single tube that zig-zags back and forth are okay, but not as good as the first one.

If you don't have a torch, or don't want to solder, JBWeld works very well to attach new brass hose barbs to the (shortened) tubes that are already on it.

Bring along a jug of water to test it. Fill it up and let it sit for a minute or two to see if it leaks...this gravity test is better than nothing. Also stay away from ones that have white or grey powdery corrosion on them, they either do leak, or will shortly.

Happy hunting!

yea, well shake it, and if you hear like rust or anything metal inside, that will be bad.. and the junk yards will usualy test it for you, if u go to a good one.. or ask them if you could run water through it to see if theres any rust.. also u could try and bend it (use lil force..) and if it feels studry then im sure it will be ok.. just if u get one from and old car (thats been sitting in the yard for a while) id get some CLR and run it though for like 20mins.. to be sure its clear.. and be sure after u hook it up to ur water system u run it for 12-72hrs to check for leaks..
