Something seems to have gotten broke on my main's BOINC. It has stopped working and when I open it, I always got the message "Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait..." and nothing happens. I can't even see current project or statistics. I tried using add project and I get the same message.

I have restarted the PC and did all to unload needed programs. I checked with task manager, the CPU is 99% free so it's not from CPU.

I know SETI has Tuesday downtime that usually lasts a few days but it shouldn't affect my local BOINC.

For the new BOINC client:

Advanced View
Advanced Tab
Event Log

Also in Advanced View
Tasks Tab and Transfers Tab will show you the status of work done, pending, or scheduled for downloading.

Check to see your messages when your computer asks for work. No work available is common on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Thursdays get better slowly. I try for a full cache on Sunday and Monday evenings.

I can't view the log because I it keeps getting stuck at waiting to communicate with the client. It's like it got stuck trying to talk to itself when it became deaf/mute somehow.

worst case:

Uninstall BOINC from the add/remove programs control panel.
Search for and delete any BOINC directories
Delete your optimization xml file at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\app_in fo.xml"
Run CCleaner (free tool: http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner ) which will clean out the orphan registry entries.
Reboot and reinstall BOINC.

There may be an easier way, but that's how I swat software bugs.

I think Windows is the problem. Late last night I ran into other issues including Firefox and IE not starting up at all. Solitaire wouldn't load either. I get blank window and busy cursor. Task manager shows 99% idle so it still is not CPU. Windows is about 18 months old so it's probably worn out and time for clean install.

If IE won't start you should be concerned that you have a bug.

Or corrupted files. If Windows repair didn't make anything work, it's time to start a new install.
