How far have people been able to push these cards? Just got them in today and putting them under water by the end of the night. Wondering whats a good range of voltage and core/memory clock.

Mine (not matrix, predecessor of matrix, direct cu II) does 940 stable at 1.1v I never bothered to change the memory speed. I know 1.1v is safe based on what I read when I did it and that it's been there for 11 months now. That stock cooler even with the fans on medium really keeps the thing quite cool. Putting it on a good loop would be better but even that stock cooler is very impressive.
The matrix has a beefed up power delivery section and an improved stock cooler design vs my card so (in theory) it could push farther. Mine can push farther too I just haven't found the need yet other than Metro 2033 that's never happy with anything.

Every card is different...I would expect 900+ though, if not 950+ under water. Volts will also differ. You can run at 1.15/1.2 all day long on that card(s).
I never got a chance to play with the clocks on those cards so i'm definitely interested in what you achieve /subscribed
From when i was reading 1.2v 24/7 was the most anybody was willing to go and that was in the upper 950's. Do you plan on putting them on water?

Yes :)
Yes :)
Stop trollin'
Yeah i noticed that after my post, was hoping nobody would notice :bang head
I bet under water with 1.2v he will see 980 if not better, there is a little switch on the back of the card that will let you pass 1.2v, just sayin'
If you have a loop that will handle it at 1.23v you might just hit 1ghz core, it's been done on the stock cooler.

Yes kohta, I've decided to put them under water :) right now running the single 580 on air. I am looking for a daily overclock so it's looking like 1.2v should be my ceiling. Will update with progress here.

1.2v is the max on the card... and should be fine under water. Though, with 2 580's, why the heck are you overclocking in the first place? :p

The LN2 switch on the back of the MSI lightning lets you go to 1.5v in MSI afterburner, crazy lol but it's there i'll see if i can find a ref pic. it's a tiny little switch.

Right...I know what/where it is... thats for LN2. I should have clarified by software 1.2v is the limit (assuming he doesnt touch the insane switch)!

lol - which program is the best for reading voltage on the 580? GPU-z? VDDC doesn't seem to change after bumping up voltage.

Asus GPU Tweak is what I would use.

goodbye corsair 850tx. you've treated me well.
i didnt take into account the watt-sucking power of the 580's ..
wouldnt boot after putting water blocks on. i had tested the gpu's before by playing battlefield3.. looks like overcurrent protection is junk now.
EarthDog

850tx should handle those cards, and easily at stock settings. MattNo has/had 2 580's on a Seasonic X750 I believe...

They were totally stock everything? Doesn't add up. Your CPU at that OC (1.4-1.44ish vcore??) under even artificial max load is going to hit 130-140W and the two cards would be < 600W, again, under artificial load, stock. Battlefield 3 wouldn't pull that 730W load. Which again would only be possible under artificial conditions, like runing Orthos on 'oblitterate' and IBT at the same time.

Not sure what happened, but there is plenty of wattage on that PSU to support that system. Sounds like a faulty PSU to me or a short somewhere killed it.
Grab either one of these: Seasonic X860 or 1KW (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=600112163&IsNodeId=1&Description=seasonic%20power%20supply&name=80%20PLUS%20PLATINUM%20Certified&Order=BESTMATCH). Maybe grab the 1KW since you are planning on going ape shhhhhh on overclocking. More headroom never hurt anyone.

I talked tto one of the "experts " at xtremesystems .. he said ssomething about the 850tx being sifferent than a seasonic or whatever.. I'm going to microcenter today to pick up a corsair professional 1200w.

1.2KW is overkill... seriously.
The 850TX is different from the seasonics, yes. Its not quite as good quality but still a very solid PSU. It puts out what it says it does and doesnt bat an eye.
I would seriously go for the Seasnonic 1KW I listed as you are blowing your wad for wattage you will not use.
EDIT: Well teh difference between the Seasonic1KW and AX1KW is $20 on newegg... go for the 1.2KW I suppose, but hte platinum on the 1KW is nice.

If its the PSU, then I will RMA the 850TX and sell the replacement.

Lol yeah aorry.. on my pager.
I'm hoping its the psu .. I can't see any reason why the mobo would be the issue.

The TX850 is an ok psu, but it starts getting weak in the knees at around 775w. Ive had it at 850w, and she was pritty warm.. so it can deliver its full power, mine tripped at around 875w. I never thought I would need that much power, but kw and up is looking better and better for me, especially with dual cards.

ok, i did the "jumper" thing on the 24pin of the tx850, and it started up and ran a few fans fine.. the 1200w i just bought to test out, still doesnt power on the system.. wtf guys... mobo dead?
EarthDog
02-03-12, 04:27 PM
That would be my first guess, or there is a short somewhere not allowing it to power on. Take the mobo out of the case and put it on a box and see if it powers up...

Hard to do when everything is watercooled. I will try loosening the mobo screws and elevate it a bit

No luck. Have a z68 board.. so if both gpu's were unplugged, it would boot up anyways right? To the integrated gpu?. I'm just ttrying to exhaust all ppssible options before having to RMA the motherboard.

So annoying, have not even had a chance to play with the new 580's.. ordered a MSI Z68A-GD80 board, going to RMA the gigabyte (i heard nothing good about their rma's) and whenever I get the replacement I will just sell it and stick with the MSI.

what is the 'average' memory clock for the 580's? Am currently sitting at 960/1200/1920 at 1.15v.. 2 hours of battlefield and the highest temp was around 42c on both.
So the new board fixed your issue ?
As in it was a dead board ?
I've had 6 or 7 580 Lightnings, all did 1200 (2400) memory, with added cooling and a few more volts my best card did 1340 (2680)mem
As for the PSU, it could well be what did in the board, you may never know for sure.
I have topped out an AX1200 with 3 580 Lightnings and a 3960 all be it they were well overclocked (more so than most can even think about)
So it can happen

The 850tx was fine, tested it on another computer.. a friend bought it off me already. The gigabyte board was dead. Going to send it out to them soon.
Am VERY pleased with the gd80.. very minimal to almost no vdroop.. stressing 4909mhz at 1.376v on linX
