I hope im putting this in the right forum...
You see all these crazy mods people are doing.. putting a mb on a piece of plywood, inside of a model car frame, you name it people have done it. but..... doesn't the metal frame on the case provide a use for shielding of emf? and in the long term isn't this bad that these components are not shielded?
( as i write this while staring into a 19 in flat crt lol)

This forum will work for this thread, It would fit better in the 'Alternative Modding' on though.
I think that people make too big of a deal about emf. They aren't going to hurt anything. If there is any way that it is hurting the PC, the results wouldn't set in for many years, by that time the whole thing will be obsolete anyway.

EMF isn't really THAT big a deal. Like Darrenct said, by the time it will catch up to you it will be way past time to upgrade anyway. And as far as mods go...to each his own. That is what makes somebodies something better than someone elses. Because you did it, you like it, and you are proud of it. I have seen pretty mods, ugly mods, dumb mods, and smart mods....but for every one of them, somebody loves it.

Only problem you might have with a casemod where you eliminate your metal case is FCC compliance, but your not trying to mass market them...sooo...otherwise, I woudln't have any health concerns.

thanks for the input everyone its was just one of those situations i was wondering about......

The reason the FCC regulates EMF emission is because it can cause interference with things like radio, TV and other wireless stuff. Use a cell phone close to an unshielded 900 MHz comp and you should get a lot of static since cell phones use that freq to communicate.
The bus probably puts out more EMF than the CPU though because there's a much larger area pulsing with this frequency so look for interference in the 100 or 133 MHz range. Does anything you're familiar with use this radio spectrum? Nothing I'm familiar with.
It's not going to hurt the PC at all AFAIK. Ya' gotta have a case though if you don't want the cat putting her big slimy nose into the CPU fan. OUCH!!!

i think the case it to keep emf out not keep it in
computers are much more sensitive to emf than other things are
but i dont think it matters anyway

Yeah actually the FCC compliance has two parts
A.) How is controls EMI emissions, as in keeping them inside
B.) How it deals with incoming EMI, i.e. can it tolerate EMI from other sources

FM Radio goes from 88.5mhz to 108.1mhz...I have seen cheaper radio's having their signals affected when close to a computer...but that was quite a long time ago, so I'm sure radio's handle it better and computers put less out.

I have a small question : What is EMF ? Toooooo many Sharks today :)

ElectroMagnetic Frequencies(or something like that).
Here is something I did to prove it is not a threat:

That blue spinning vortex of death produces a lot of EMF. It even has a warning sticker that says not to put it anywhere near electronic devices. My computer still seems to be running at full speed.

that is one cooooool blue spinning vortex of death...
(my wife would probably hate it though)

Yah, I got it for christmas. I've seen them at Spencer's for around $40. It'd look really cool if I could fit it in my case...

what was your test
i have a huge gloab like that
it doesnt shoot of to much emf unless you are ground and get near it like a inch
i could make floresent light tubes glow and neon signs glow to
but only really close

Those things put out a lot of EMF compared to anything else your using in the house. Just putting it next to the computer exposes it to more EMF than your PC will ever see in normal use.
On a side note, I once had a friend who built a giant tesla coil from scratch for a science project. It could light up a 4 foot flourescent bulb from a couple feet away. It was really cool, but it scared the crap out of me, if you got too close to it, you'd heve a million volts shooting through your body before you had any idea what was going on:eek:
