View Full Version : Considering an upgrade, HOW much GPU do I actually need.

Ok so I currently have 2x GTX 460s which are serving me well on 1x monitor but Im noticing 2 things with my current setup. I run out of vRam well before I run out of GPU power almost always. My current setup has 2x HP 2405wg 1920x1200 monitors. The 2nd monitor is rotated into portrait mode and I dont game on it. Ok so a few things Ive noticed 1st having mixed aspect monitors is a little bit of a PITA. 2nd I want to game on more than one monitor and am not willing to give up running at high graphics or better. 3rd is to extend #2 by adding a 3rd 2405wg and spin all 3 into portrait mode.

Ok so I am willing to spend on this but it has to be reasonable. As much as id love to just buy 2x 680s or 2x 7970s thats just not going to happen. So lets say with a budget of ~700 what GPUs will game across 3600*1920px resolution at high or better?

My monitors support DVI and DP so that is not a consideration. I do use adobe premiere and photoshop fairly regularly which currently supports CUDA acceleration but PS CS6 is supposed to include OpenCL support. My preference is nVidia but I like AMD just as much so I could go either way.

What ya got?

I'd grab a 670 and save rhe rest to SLI in the future ($400ea). GTX 460 SLI to a 670 is almost equal, but the 670 has 2X the vRAM. When you save uo the extra $100, grab a second 670 for some monster performance.

he might be better off with a 3gb card maybe 7970,

That's probably a better solution, brain flop. :chair:.

Exactly what I said in my first post, but substitute the 7950 in for the 670, a bit less horsepower but more vRAM.
