View Full Version : Captain! we need more power!!!
Ever since i upgraded to a northwood on my TH7II-R i have been having vcore problems. I have an Antec 300W and a PowMax 400W. Neither of them are able to provide proper vcore voltage. And, neither of them had any problems with my old P4 1.5. But suddenly, i can't get above 1.48vcore on my 1.6A. Even when it isn't overclocked. Even when i set the vcore to 1.65 in the bios it only gives me 1.48. This is reported in both the bios and software. Would the VID pin trick help? Or is the voltage readings off?
Most TH7-II mobos have actual vcore that lags behind the setting. Mine averages about 0.1v lower than the setting. You might try Mr. Naturals 39C BIOS, that will allow settings up to 1.85v instead of the normal 1.625v max.

You mean that Mr. Naturals 39C Bios does "true" 1.85V to the Vcore?

That I don't know for sure, but probably not. I haven't used the "39C" BIOS yet, but I have used the "77" BIOS which still had my measured vcore lagging behind the setting. However, my point was, it would allow him to increase his options a little more without having to VID pin. My guess is that at 1.85v BIOS setting, that should give him at least 1.7v actual vcore. If he decides to do hardcore overclocking and has good cooling, then wire wrapping or mobo volt mod might be the only option.

I totally agree with you, cause I’m in the same boat. The max volts I get from the “77” Bios is 1.7.4 from several programs that report Vcore. I’m sure my 1.8 NW would do more Mhz if I also hardwire the CPU, but having more volts to my access will persuade me to use them to test the limits of the CPU & in turn, like what I see & feel, then I must deal with the heat from the added Vcore & higher clock speed. So…. Until 3,000 Mhz is the norm, I’ll stay kewl & error free with my present settings.

Thanks, i'm glad that the 39c bios should help. I was a little wary of the VID pin. But the strange thing was, Windows ran fine at 1.48 up to 140fsb. Is this normal? I have the Thermal Take Volcano 7+ so i have better cooling than the stock (go copper!!! :D ). But i have read that other people haven't even been able to to get their woody up to 133fsb. Plus i haven't noticed my Kingston RIMMS heating up much? Is this because i haven't overclocked it all that much yet? :eh?:
It's a gamble when you overclock. Just because one person gets a certain overclock, doesn't mean the next will do the same. I've been noticing that the Northwoods seem to be getting better and better. That's no surprise as that's the way Intel usually works when they release a new chip. They get the bugs worked out and start using higher yield core and the CPUs get better and then Intel releases a faster CPU, like they just did with the 2.4 gig Northy. I bet your newer 1.8a will whoop my early release 2.0a if you went all out.

Hi Batboy,
Been a while... From what i see that Intel has out produced them self this time:cool: From my testing, i see that the memory & sub sys. can't keep up with the NW. I Contradicted my last post & went & hardwired my CPU today & only bumped it up .25 Volts & MAN! 100% STABLE! Prim95,Syssoft burnin, CPU intensive games"
I would take a guess that this CPU would do 2700 with the right cooling that's 900Mhz OC! imagin if the Memory set at 400 with this type of OC. I would guess someone with steal it
I not telling anyone to do this. Hardwiring your CPU may not get you the same results, like Batboy says "It's a gamble when you overclock"
