View Full Version : deskstar busted??
i have an ibm deskstar 40 gig, 7200 rpm, ata 100 drive...i was using it fine with windows 2000, then yesterday, my siter tells me i have no sound...i check drivers and still nothing. So i unplug the sound card, then plug it back in, and turn on again. The machine boots into windows, and when the icons in the try are appearing, the sound volume icon appears, then a blue screen appeared, then an automatic restart. When the bios is detecting the drives, first i got a 'disk read error, press ctrl+alt+del to restart' error, then after a few restarts, the detecting drives would detect none for boot disk. Now i can't boot into windows...I had heard there was something about ibm drives suddenly dying...what's going on?? If it is broken, what can i do???
Which model of drive is it?
gxp 75,60 or120?
Ibm has some tools on the web site to diagnose the problem. It should report you back and error code. The you can RMA the drive.
I've had some real bad luck with the 75 series. Drive failed with no warning. Lost all data.
do i rma with ibm or newegg....?? i bought it thru newegg.com

Newegg if it hasnt been more than 30 days.....
when my 60gxp left this earth, i didnt get so much as a warning. I just came home from work and there was a black screen. The drive was totally gone.
I lost a certain folder that starts with a p and ends with an n, it had 22 gigs of cool video's in it:(
and all my school reports, games, everything. All of my funny photochops too......

I'll pray for your sake that it is a virus or something like that ..... if not, I am afraid that yet another IBM has bit the dust ....... hope it isn't one of the newer 120 gxp line.

i would like to add that my IBM drive had a 50cfm 80mm fan blowing over it, as is built into the Antec case i have. It was still a bit warm to the touch.
Without a fan blowing over it, my Maxtor now is never over 1c over ambient case temp (all temps monitored with digidoc 5)

the main reason that IBM's die is a build up of heat and it 'fry's' the platter.....
so... the moral of this story...
always budget IBM purchases to include either a decent HDD cooler or a couple of fans!!!
i've had 2*40's (60gxp) for about 12 months, and with a couple of fans blowin on 'em, never had a problem.... *touch wood*
:D
it's been more than a month that i bought the thing and i rma'd it through newegg and got approved..im sending it in today..is there any way i can get a different brand drive??? I mean if it's the same price i paid for the deskstar?? i don't want another ibm drive..everybody's having problems..how do i tell them i want to get a different drive???
Hey turok any chance you might tell us what model of IBM drive it was??
Do tell.
deathstar model ????
It's an IBM DEATHSTAR 120 gxp, 40 gig, 7200 rpm model....i didn't even research if these things were reliable or not.. i thought, hey it's ibm, it's probably good...oh well...i'll know next time
oh gees. a 120. That's bad news. I just got 3 of them from IBM RMAed from failed 75 model.
I hope my 120s don't die.
oh man...u got 120's for 75's by rma'ing with ibm?? should i rma with ibm or newegg?????

8000 mp3's on a 56k? I have had a cable modem for a few years, and I'm only up to about 5000. That sucks.
As for replacing the IBMs, I have a 40 gig and 27 gig IBM Desktars. I've had absolutly no problems with either of them.
But when all the problems with IBMs starting popping up and since I needed more space anyway, I got an 80gig maxtor.
Its been great so far. I wanted to get that 8mb cache WD drive but I'm not going to spend that much on a HD.
BTW Lian Li cases are great for cooling HD's. They have a drive cage right in front of 2 80mm intake fans. I have the

are the deskstar's worth getting at all? are any of them okay the 60, 75, or 120's ?
Hi,
I got a deskstar 120GXP 2 weeks ago, and like it very much, silent and very fast. Before taking this decission, I did some web digging, and have to tell you that there are *extremely few* posts of failing 120GXPs. Many people says this is because this drives have been not long in the field, but for one, they have already been available 6 months, (and sales have been huge) and in second place I am talking about 10 fold less failure reports than other new competing drives (with laso few months in the market)... If we talk about 60GXPs, there looks like these have no more failing rate than other drives (statistically speaking)... 75GXPs are another story... there are LOTS of failing reports.
In summary... I would be *very* confident in 120GXPs (in fact, I did buy one), and would also not hesitate buying a 60GXP.
Just an opinion

Only time will tell. The 120s might be kick butt drives. Certainly much faster than my seagate 7200.
IBM did RMA my 3 gxps for 120s. But the service was really not that good.
Maxtor on the other hand, i rmaed a dead quantum drive with them 2 weeks ago and I had the replacement in my hands within 3 days. Pretty darn impressive.

I bet this is not a hard drive problem, did you either clicks from the hard drive? the hard drive would not make the sound not work, sound more like something to do with the RAM. Those 120GXP do not fail very easily, in fact i have not heard of anyone who had one which failed. Whoever told you IBM hard drives failed referred to the previous models.
Put the hard disk in another computer to see if it does work.

what about the 333 hours a month recommendation run-time? Doesn't that point to some technical short comings of the drive? 120gxp has supperior performance over the 60 and 75 series, but is it worth getting over a different brand?

Sounds like IBM is not catching the ball here. I stick with WD or Maxtor 99% of the time. Nuff Said :)

Hi,
Re. the 333 hours/month, I think this has been discussed to death in the forums, and all around the net. The fact is, *somebody* (initially from within IBM, but later also outside) confused the lab conditions for the POH (power on hours) calculation as if those were a usage limitation. IBM officials later on clarified this issue.
The truth is, that *all and every other* drive manufacturer who cares to calculate POH figures for their products uses similar enviromental and usage assumptions as IBM for desktop drives. And this includes most of the big ones (Maxtor, Seagate, WD,..) , but *never* should this be interpreted as a *limit*, not even a usage requirement for disk usage...
