View Full Version : are maxtor d740x loud or not?
i went to overclockers.co.uk's forums and there has been a debate on how the maxtor d740x has a really high pitched whine and that it just too loud. is this true? im looking for a quiet hdd but one which is quick also, so its either a seagate cuda or a d740x.

I can just barely hear mine when its writing. I'd say they're very quiet.

mine ISN"T the quiet version, and it never makes an audible peep, EVER!
thats BS ive never heard of one makin a peep, unless they threw it at the wall or ran it over or somethin....
a sledgehammer might make it whine too

Mine is very quiet... The only way I can hear it at all, is to take off the case cover.
good stuff, how are they comparable to the seagate cuda ones?

I have 2-D740X' 40gig HDD's in a RAID "0" setup and it is virtually silent. Maybe the whining they hear is their significant others complaining.

The barracuda IV is the quietest drive ever tested by storage review ......... I can attest to that 'cause I have never heard mine ....... even with the case open !!
The liquid bearing Maxtors are not as quiet but quicker and ATA 133 .
I'll have one to compare to my seagate soon.

the case they will be in is a lian li 61, with 3 case fans, will i notice the difference in terms of noise between the seagate and the maxtor? considering there are 3 other case fans, plus cpu fan and psu fan.
I don't think you will be able to any sound comming from the HD's with 5 fan's running... :p
Seriously, I don't think you will notice any differ of those two HD's.
