Just installed my new Seagate 80gig hard drive. The drive is showing up as a secondary master in post and my DVD is showing up as primary master. But, the drive is showing up in windows as Drive E: and my DVD is showing up as drive D:. With nothing as C: and D:?????

Any questions?

umm, i believe the middle connector on IDE cables are the master channel, so that might be it, if you have your drives set to cable select...i had the same prob

for your 80 wire (ATA 66+)ithe middle gray connector is slave and the black end connector is master-this is needed, however make sure that your drives are jumped both CS or the Master and Slave

a mis-jumpered/place drive appears seems to be your problem

I have tried both middle and end connection on my cable. The Drive is set to master/or single drive. It is the only drive in the system now.

If its not showing up properly in your BIOS, then you either have a jumper wrong, or you have the wrong connector on the cable plugged into the drive; or both.

The end connector is the the MASTER, and the middle is the SLAVE.

Make sure you have the correct end plugged into the motherboard (the connector furthest away from the other two goes into the motherboard).

As for your drive letter problem (only deal with this once you get your master/slave stuff sorted out), I need to know what Operating System your running.

Ok, what happens when you set the Seagate to Master, and you have it on the master plug on the cable, and you have it plugged in to the first IDE channel? By itself, i mean.

There's the problem. You have to change the letter of the drive manually with XP sometimes, it's a glitch. Just a pain in the arse. For some reason, when you alter your configuration, it sometimes uses the next avalible drive letters. It's almost as if it still hanging on to the old configuration settings.

Windows will not let me change the drive letter on this volume becasue its the boot volume.

i just installed 2000 on my roomies computer and it too doesn't allow for a change in the harddrive letter, if this is the os you are running i will give it a look see and get back to you. If not, I wish you the best of luck

check the seagate website. i originally had a problem getting one of my two WD's to work in my fiancee's comp. i couldn't get the #$%&er partitioned correctly. at one point it thought it was a 4gb floppy drive, and another time a 12 gig zip drive...after i went to WD's website, i used a boot disk they had and it partitioned the little bugger and it showed correctly in windows. if that's similar to your problem, go to seagate's website...

I would STRONGLY reccommend that you do not have your high speed hd on the same IDE channel with your slower DVD device, seperate them. Put the dvd drive on the second ide channel. Your current config forces the hd to 'clock' down to the transfer speed of the dvd.

As far as the drive jumpers and cable connector postions are concerned, I would like to clarify what others have posted. The end connector is the master and the middle is the slave. (That is correct) However this really only matters if both devices are jumpered to CS (cable select) If device A is jumpered as master, and B is slave, then postion on the cable does not matter. The drives dictate configuration.

Have you done what Flounder suggested?

I do have the drives seperated. My hard drive is on my primary IDE channel and the DVD is on the secondary IDE channel
