one is a writer the other is rewritable i believe...either that or you've been comparing the sony and the pioneer ones...

you may want to wait until the recordable dvd standards settle down a bit. right now there's dvd-r, dvd-rw,dvd+rw, dvd+r, and dvd-ram, and which are compatible with which dvd players is confusing. if you're just looking for data storage though, it wouldn't matter as much.
