Question about this drive.

While booting the computer I notice that the drive is detected as pio mode 4 not udma 33.

I checked in windows and it was running in pio mode 4 as well. Set the Secondary slave ide controler to run in DMA mode. Rebooted and it seems to be in DMA mode now.

Question:

How do i get the device to be detected as UDMA mode when it is booting just after the power up of the computer? Is it possible?

I've noticed this drive takes over 8 mins to burn a 700 meg cd. It's a 32x drive. I thought it would burn loads faster.

Help! :)

I have a LG CD-RW 16x. I think it is not an UDMA device. Are you sure yours is? LG site (http://www.lgeus.com/Product/CD/GCE_8320b.asp) says "PIO Mode 4 or Multi-DMA Mode 2". Its speed is not enough to fill the DMA channel, even when reading at 40x. Then to make it UDMA would be pointless.
Mine also takes about 8 min including verify data using Nero. Have read in some post that the fastest speeds only take place in some portions of the CDs, hence the difference from, say, 16 to 32 would be minimal.
I think some CD-RW models can detect the media's maximum write speed or quality, them if you use a 12x media it will burn it at 12x and not at the writer's maximum, say, 36x. Seems like LG's CD-RWs implements it in some way.
One small thing that seems to help in compatibility and stability is to make the CD-RW master.

Kakao:

You're probably right, the device may not be UDMA. After setting the windows ide channel 2 slave to DMA mode the burner works 50% faster.

While in pio mode in windows the burner was using 100% cpu and the machine was running slow as heck. After the change to dma the burner completes a 600 meg cd in 2 mins 58 secs. AWSOME!

Thanks for your help Kakao.
