I'm going to be doing a format/reistall this morning. I have an unused 2nd HDD.
I'm wondering if there is free software I can use to make an image of my OS partitions??

I'm pretty sure IBM and Maxtor both have a utility disk that allows you to move data from one HD to the other. The Maxtor disk is called Maxblast.

Can a prog like that just copy a partition or 2 or will it automatically do the whold drive? I only want to back up 2 partitions totaling about 10.5GB

It's probably the whole drive but then again I don't remember. There is only one way to find out:p

Not free, but I use Drive Image 5.0. It is the best backup I have ever used, since it just make images of whatever partitions I want and does compression. In addition, I don't have to hide the drive I'm making backups on or any craziness like that. It also can backup partitions to CDR and CDRW. Version 4.0 has all the same features as far as I know and only costs about $20. If you don't need CDR support, than you can get an even older version like 3.0 or 2.0 for $5 or $10.

All software is free, its just a matter of knowing where to look! Seriously though, I use Drive Image 4.0 on a floppy disk to run the program from DOS. I've had it crash loading from Windows and lost my partition. Never happened in DOS. ALWAYS run it from the floppy if you value your data...Mark
You can probably get a trial version of any program. Go to www.download.com, a while ago I found some good imaging tools for free or trial there.
