well, im trying to install win2k on a 30g maxtor hd. it will go all the way threw the format. but at the end it tells me. the drive may be damaged, or something could have went wrong. i tried 2 times and got the same error. with the hard drive being blank, is there a way to check and see if maybe the drive just has alot of bad clusters? maybe it just needs a good kick in the ass. any suggestions on what to do to get this thing working would be much appreciated.

Though I've never used it, I understand that Maxtor has a drive diagnostic utility available at their site. If I were you, I'd try that.
Get the MaxBlast utility at the Maxtor site. It has the diagnostics and the low level format utility as well. You could try the diag, but the LLF will probably fix the problem since it clears the data areas and the landing zones as well.
