I have a 40 GB Maxtor 5400 RPM hard disk, and a Tekram Mobo with intels 440bx chipset, Slot 1 P2 350........Im wondering If I need to buy a seperate controller card to make my hd go faster or is the motherboard IDE controller enough because I saw a Maxtor ATA 100 Controller card and it made me curious

it would transfer data faster at ATA100 / UDMA100 than on a regular IDE chain.

However, i have had problems with my ATA100 (Promise Onboard A7V133) with my Maxtor 30Gig/7200, it would do weird things like corrupt my profile, or small registry errors... I dropped it back to my IDE chain... A Maxtor-certified one should no doubt work flawlessly though.

you have to remember that your hard drive is only 5400RPM, and the 'general' performance increase would be little. The only place you would see a big improvement is buffered stuff (stuff in the hard drive's cache, that doesn't need to be read off the hd, but immediately transfered)
