how much does the used space in the hard disk influence disk performance? or it doesnt at all.

As long as you defragment and scandisk regularly, it doesn't effect performance.

If you're a little lazy (I am sometimes) about running defrag, it can slow a drive down quite a bit, bacause it has to hunt for each piece of the file you want to open. Defragmenting puts all the pieces of each file into the same area on the harddrive's disk so it doesn't have to search much.

I setup disk defragmenter to run at nights; like at 1 AM. You can run other things too using the Scheduled Tasks (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools)
