View Full Version : Purple stars

How about a new star classification for hyper-active forums members?

It would be for those few people who actively promote the forums on other websites, spin-off sites if you will, like the 3dmark Team's mods and like what Cluster and Ploaf do for the Folding Team. I'm sure there are others I forgot or am not aware of.

Blue stars would still be a step higher up. And so people deserving of both could choose and would certainly take the blue stars over the purple ones(unless they happen to fancy purple). These wearers of the purple stars would be members who are particularly successful in promoting the forums or forums' teams, and consistently come up with new ideas that turn out to help the forums grow or become even better. They also would have a decent ratio of useful posts/frivolous posts, and often make very detailed explanations when helping noobs- like the seniors do!Just say the purple stars would be for "OC activists", the guys and gals who haven't quite earned theri way into the blue yet nor worked up 4000+ posts for the white.

Like there was this guy who heard Skip was low on funds because there were no advertisers for the next month. He suggested taking up a collection to make a Folding team ad for the forums- thus helping team 32 gain new members through advertising and giving a nice boost to Skip's paypal account. He's also a mod for the 3dmark Team site, and a very active recruiter for both the 3dmark and Folding@Home teams.... He also is making sure the 3dmark team site does some nice advertisment for the Folding@Home Team and for the O/C forums.

Well, us promoting our forums is a good idea but don't go to other forums and do it. Like us many forums don't allow you to advertise for websites.

Arkaine23

I was talking about personal websites that are extensions of overclockers.com, not other forums. I don't visit any other forums. My heart belongs to O/C!!!

I mean I must average at least 64 hours/week on the forums!

Mods, this is an open invitation to joke around with my rank and stars...

not a bad idea but would just be work for skip.

Would it be a lot of work to pick a handful a people who are very active on the forums? Maybe the seniors nominate at the same time they nominate for the blue.... and then say why they think the person deserves the purple stars...

acitivty-recruiting-promoting
advertising forums and teams
good ideas that make the forums or forums' teams better
1/2way decent posts though not necessarily a high post count
Follows forum rules
effective use of language, but good-typing skills not required

Mods/Admin would just have a brief discussion, cuz they'll probably be familiar with the posts of some one who fits the purple profile anyway. This category might also include a few people nominated but rejected for the blue stars... like a consolation category.

Don't know.... I think I've written what I mean pretty clearly. Not gonna keep pushing at it. I'm just tired of orange and think I'm still too noobish for blue. lol

Star color is not a big deal. Just thought colorizing the forums a little more would be good. :)

i think arkaine is on to something though, we all know that the blue stars are hard to get, and rightly so. THose guys/girls are very deserving of them and they do a great job. I think a new color set would help the forums. It would encourage some people to post a little better and to do more and give more back to these forums. just my .02

I think purple stars would be a great idea - postcount related stars/colors are imo pointless.

We would need a well defined set of criteria like we have for senior members eg:

1) Actively promotes the forums/related projects in a mature and responsible manner.

2) Posts are informative and meaningful - no one word answers such as 'lol' 'rofl' etc.

3) Contributes to meaningful discussion in a variety of areas: eg doesn't sit in GCRD all day :D.

4) Handles arguments/flaming in a postive and calm way - buy calmly asking the participants to calm down and/or contacting a Mod/Admin.

5) Appropriate language at all times. Adheres to forum rules - Avatar/sig/posting rules etc.

Just a draft, feel free to comment.

As for the rank name I feel something like 'active member' or 'committed member'.

How about we mess with Yodums and make it white stars instead. And call them "Dedicated Members" :D

Just a thought.

Yea, I think that would definitely be a cool idea. I am trying to think of what to add to David's list, but David, you have pretty much covered it all. :p I think another good one is to be friendly to all members as well; friendly people tend to have that disease; it catches on to other people. :)

whoa there, i really like this idea, but dont make the requirements too strict, and dont let the seniors pick them.

I would say a damn good start to this new rank (white stars and dedicated member) would be Yodums, Arkiane, Jbell, Rain, Takiwa, Funnyperson, Dissolved (if he ever comes back), Silver (definately Silver:)), and a few others i cant think of at 6am.
and myself of course:D!!!!
and this room has to be inacessible to seniors, it would be our own private little room, for the "dedicated members".
2000 post minimum, and the dedicated members nominate new ones.
i think with a little planning this would be great for us full time members to feel a little more important than the run of the mill i need help with blah blah members.

oh, Rain can bypass the post count requirements cause he had his reset.

what do u guys think?

Get the fire hoses on them, quick!

(Aim for Malakai! He seems to be some sort of ringleader!)

:D

Joking aside guys, being a Senior doesn't confer any extra bonuses on us. We are just as much at the mercy of the mods/admins as the rest of you..........:)

The way the restricted rooms work (I think I can tell you this, without being shot!) is that Seniors/Mods/Admins get in the Blue Roon, Mods and Admins in the Green Room(just like the blue room, but with waitress service!), and the Admins have a Red Mountain Retreat, with En-Suite facilities.......so to be fair, your "White Room" would fit in at the bottom of the slot........

Malakai
05-30-02, 01:58 AM
i think our room should be like a Senior forum alternative, unless u wanna let us in your room;)

i can live with that, u get in ours and we get in yours.

and make this a bump, i really like this idea, a lot.
even if the evil blue guys are allowed in:D

I can't find a hole in your list of nominees, malakai... and there are a few others to add- David for one, because of his accomplishment, Overfoldix, and his high activity in the folding arena. NaSsoccer (3dMark, Folding, and OC3d work) and Maximus Nickus (beat-all, end-all stickies about video tweaking and cooling)... I'll have to look around for a few more.

Yodums just might want to keep his white stars... he's earned them.

But I wasn't really going for a post count requirement, since really active members will probably have that anyway (5+ stars) and even new members to the forums can have some great ideas. I don't think the purple will need its own little room- since they're not in the blue yet! And I don't think purple would deserve much more than a new star color as they'd all still need a goal a.k.a. blue stars. The super active members already have the threads and stickies and spin-off websites they've founded, not to mention the behind-the-scenes secret chat areas that aren't official with the forums.

That is a good idea to have the mods pick the 1st batch and then have the purple stars nominate others... less work on seniors and mods/admin that way, so long as the list includes a few reasons for the selection of each nominee so the mods/admin don't have to do much research.

We're begging for a new star category here, so let's not ask for too much..... yet. ;)

the ones u mentioned are DEFINATES. i cant believe i forgot them. And id have to say Jeff Bolton too. He is extremely helpful in the alt OS topic.

Being neither a hyper-active (by your defs) member, nor even candidate into seniors, I nevertheless SUPPORT this idea. I think it won't cost much blood to Skip (sorry Skip ;) ), but would heat up the forum a lil bit... Besides, people would perhaps better watch their language (I hope)...

Yeah it pretty much is being a senior.

I think people should get purple stars for...

* Writing a number of articles for Overclockers.com
* Writing a number of stickies on the forums
* Being a active member of the forums
* But also be banned a few times, and disliked

I would say that if members matching the above criteria did the following, they may be nominated for senior member:

Made an effort to be more agreeable, less cocky, blunt and arrogant, scarcastic and irritating they would become more liked, and as such would probably come to enjoy the forums more

Attempt to help more in a polite and friendly manner

Change their attitude and posting style, so as to avoid being banned.

Discuss issues in plain English, be polite, honest and agreeable, even when being flamed or attacked by other members.

Without having read the thread (sorry, limited on internet time), I can tell you that right now, this idea is not a possibility. iNet is not speaking to us, and without them, we cannot change any star colors from what we currently have.

Still no word from INet? Man, that is a big bummer.

I do like the idea of a new color, and Arkaine has some good thoughts on this. It could be a good alternative for people chosen to be seniors, especially if you are given a choice between blue (senior) or purple ('hyper' member as arkaine suggested). Allow both into the Blue Room, as it seems the qualifications for purple are very similar to those for being a senior member.

However, according to JoT, this would hinge on getting in contact with INet. If something could be done with them, I think purple would be a great addition to the forums.

There are another couple I would nominate for Purple if it came into being a real star 'rank'. I.M.O.G. and Kendan.

Man this idea sounds brilliant. I understand it is tough to become a senior, so this would become a 'stepping stone' on the way to becoming one (if i am reading it right).

Is there any posts on the whole Inet thing? Curious as to why they aren't talking to OCforums. Sorry i love gossip it passes time :p

I like the idea from what I understand of it. In essence, purple stars are for those who do allot of good around the forums but aren't quite up to snuff for being a senior?

What about having a star color for those seniors who are the best of the best?

That is what I was thinking was the whole idea. As for becoming one, tough, maybe, give it a few years of hard work, be helpful, nice, active, demonstrate your knowledge, and you will probably become one yourself. Then again, I don't know much.

As for iNET, I don't expect much out of them. If they can't get their asses from wherever they are, over a few feet to the computer for a few seconds to give us (or even the staff ) a quick headsup before the forums go down for more than 16 hours due to "scheduled (note that word. Scheduled.) maintence, then I doubt they would upload a purple star to the forums directory. :eh?:

Oh yes, if I remember correctly, I was playing with star colors a month or two back, and purple was very similar to the pink we have now, and also was blistering on the eyes. There are basically no star colors left that will work for a new rank.

I didn't notice the date on this thread, but jebus.

Also, there is already a whole new set of stars and ranks for seniors, it's called the greens ;) As for "hyperactive" members, we have the pinks right now, so Arkaine's wish came true.

However, we dont need donations now because iNet run the show here (and pay the bills :D). Also, as LutaWicasa mentioned, we already have people with red, green, blue, pink, white, orange and yellow stars. We don't want to go confusing people ;).

As for ranks, likewise. Some people get ranks for a couple days if a Mod has a sense of humour or whatever, and us Seniors get picked on without asking .

The vB Admin panel has a control to upload smilies. However rank images (ie stars) must be uploaded manually.

However, in vB3 you can assign which modules any given Admin can access. INet may not allow Lyman and Brian to access modules that upload data, perhaps for security reasons.

You get pink stars when you have over 10K posts. I also think that when you get pink stars you should get a automatic ban from the forums for a month, just so you can see that there is life beyond this forum :D.

If Sen reads this I am just kidding around buddy :D.

.
That should happen at 15k posts, that'd be funny. But since they love the forums they will probally just make a new name for a month.

My stars are pink, but cover them with blue :D

I have been banned around about the 10k post mark but I literally asked for that. Exams = suck.

I can understand if Inet locks out that section of the admin panel, but if they did not there is an upload page for smileys where you do not have to ftp in to add them. ( I just checked on the Forum I have admin privledges at.)) Also if I am not mistaken one of the admins just added a few smileys about a month ago.
