Basically, I'm looking into buying a CD-rw drive and I'd like to know which brands offer burn-proof (or a clone of it) and which drives perform best. I'm looking for somethign between the 16x-24x range and so far I'm only thinking of Plextor and TDK, any help?

Sonsider Lite-On drives. Lite-Ons are essentially rebadged Plextors. The only difference, besides the price, is that Lite-On uses lesser quality parts (I believe Plextor uses metal gears whereas Lite-On uses plastic). Lite-On is still a good contender, though

I just bought a 32x LG burner for 120 cad.

Has a burn proof clone technology. So far it's excellent. Running it with nero.

Streets ahead of my 4x yamaha scsi burner.

I have 2 Lite On CD-RW's (16x and 32X) and they both are very good. They perform almost as good as Plextor and are 30-40-% less $$$.
I had a TDK Velo CD 16X but had to return it, quit working.

Newegg has the 32X for $70=shipping. Great price.

I had the TDK 16x for about a year and a half and never had any problems. TDK just came out with a rebate for their 32x burner and I got it for $74 after the $50 mail-in-rebate. I have a Plextor 24x at work. Both the TDK and Plextor drives are flawless. You could really buy any brand you want without worrying although I would go with the TDK just cause you can save quite a bit of cash.

is there anyone here who has a list of or could link me to a site with a list of burners with buRN proof of clones of it? It'd be greatly appreciated.

As for drives, I have 4 Lite-On drives and a TDK. I have never had a problem with the Lite-On drives, but the TDK has given me a few problems, nothing major, but I prefer the Lite-On drives cause they are the same high quality but cheaper:)

So basically, there really is no reason to spend the money on a plextor, and LG, or Lite-on would both be very feasible altenatives while TDK should be avoided. Thanks everybody, tho I still think that the plextor 24x from newegg at 124 with a 20 dollar rebate is a good deal, i'll go with a much cheaper lite-on

for the person that said something about liteon..ya..they are great if you dont want to spend the $$ for quality..or you dont need features...like making VCDs or using CDTEXT..liteon is VERY limited in the options...but plextor has EVERYTHING..

Actually, if you read CDRINFO.COM, you'll see the LiteOn drives are great. The LiteOns will do pretty much everything the Plextors will do. I've got a TDK that is a rebadged LiteOn 24x drive and I've made plenty of CDs with CDTEXT, VCD, etc. Trust me, that is NOT an issue. In fact, pretty much ANY drive out there today has pretty much the same capabilities. Some may be slightly better than others at different things, but they will do them all.

Just got one Lite On LTR-40125S a couple of weeks ago at New Egg (http://www.newegg.com) .

It's the best bang for the $$ plus gives you all bells and whistles you won't find together in other drives (i.e. Buffer Underrun protection, extended write area - some people burning up to 900MB using this baby, it has quiet mechanism, decent buffer and great access speeds.

I'm very happy with mine.
For $74 Retail package with full version of Nero 5.5 (That costs about the same) including FedEx S&H you will get a real hi-performance burner.

See details here. (http://www.liteonit.com/english--p-rw40125.htm)

Good Luck
