I know I have at least 2 gigs of free space on my 15 gig maxtor drive. But I do scan disk and it says i have only 2 mb after the scan. WHat is wrong??? Whats going on?

For the first problem... lost file fragments are usually what happens when the HDD loses power during a read/write. If it doesn't tear the partition table to pieces, it'll dump chunks of whatever it was writing across random parts of the disk. So if you just chunk your computer off without shutting it down properly, it'll find a few lost file fragments.
I've only had file corruption occur this way twice. Once the CD-ROM drivers pooed out, and once the Trillian logs were cross-linked. No biggy.
Second problem? No idea.
