I've had 4 IBM drives in the last year (2 60GXP and 2 75GXP) and three of them died (both 60's and one 70) and the 4th is on it's way out.
I've also had a Maxtor "L" series and it died after 3 days. It's replacement has been up for two months.
I've had one Seagate Cuda IV and it's run like a champ. It's the slowest out of the three brands, but I'd rather have a slightly slower working drive then a slightly faster busted one. :)

the new maxtors and the new line of IBM are as reliable as anything else.

I wish you would have told that to my D740X before it died. :)
Firstly, I think i read a couple of days ago about ibm drives having problems running in raid arrays.
Secondly, I don't think Yodums2 is right about ibm's 120 line being as reliable as "anything else" at the moment Ibm has a terrible track recored with the gxp line.
maxtor with fluid bearings might be an option.

:D, all hard drives are susepteple to getting screwed up (sorry couldn't thing of a better word) some hard drive series get screwed up much more than others e.g. the previous 2 IBM series and many of the WD series. But those D740X maxtors and 120GXP IBM's should not cause problems. Failure rate is low but you can never be too sure of any hard disk.

<blind love for WD>
WD RULES!
</blind love for WD>
sorry. the thing i don't get is how we all bitch about one or two companies, while the other 2/3 back seagate or maxtor. i will always love wd, never had a thing die on me. now, i loved WD before all my friends maxtors and ibm's were shot to hell out of the box in my dorms last yr and are still rma'ing them (the ibm has died 7 times...he won't give up on it...the maxtor friends have rma'ed a combined total of 8. while my WD friends lord it over them that if they payed just a little more, they'd not be aslikely to rma.) but the thing is, we've all had bad experiences with one company or two. maybe all three. i always find those whose drive is better discussions to be bupkis and not valid in the least. so, in conclusion, ignore my response, cause i'm a wd foo:D
but if i had to choose between maxtor and ibm, i'd go maxtor. ibm helped make the power pc chip *shudders* and other various horrors.

IBM also made the Internet, one of the biggest inventions of the 20th century, but you ignore that :D
Wasn't the the network that became the internet a US army cold war technology.
Advanced Research Projects Agency created the beginings of the internet topology as a missle control system with massive redundency.
basically the beginings of packet switching networks.

But if the IBM drive in my computer wont boot then the "IBM Internet" is worthless to me. :)

agreed:D
btw the US department of defence created ARPANET but IBM, MCI and some computer company from Boston created the Internet from ARPANET to NSFNET then created ANSNET which is what we are currently using.
You're all wrong! Al Gore invented the internet! :D

The new IBMs are the fastest IDE HDs out there right now. Rember that they have a time limit on the amount the drive should be used dailly and they have had tons of problems with failling drives. You really will not notice a difference in speed between ATA 100 and 133, its a waste of money. I really do not know anything about the Maxtors so I cannot coment there. I realize that you said out of the two pick one but I would like to throw this in, if you are you goign to o/c the system to super high FSB then I would get the segate baracuda IV.
See this thread for ATA 133 vs ATA 100

I have a Maxtor D740X 80G 6L080L4
http://www.maxtor.com/products/DiamondMax/diamondmaxPlus/QuickSpecs/42094.htm
its an ATA133 drive... and it is no faster when using ATA 133 over ATA 100.
So ATA 133 should not even be a must for you.
