Hi

I have never overclocked b4. I have Abit TH7-II RAID and P4 1.8Ghz.

When i changed the clock speed in Softmenu III upwards and restart I get a kind of alarm and it wont boot. I disconnect the core and try again. This time trying a different (lower speed) setting, then i get some Error when it boots up about the CPU. I tried a 3rd time to set it at 1866 (133 x 14) instead of 1800 (100 x 18) and i get the alarm again. Voltage is set at default of 1.75

Any help appreciated. I might be a n00b but i am a fast and technically minded person :)

Cheers

Will it boot at default speed right now? If so, give me a run down of your SoftMenu BIOS settings. I'll try to walk you through this. First off, make sure you have the "speed error hold" setting on "disable". Leave the multiplier at 18X, it's locked and you can change it anyway. Too bad you have a 1.8 gig Willamette instead of a Northwood.

Yeah it will boot at default speed. I am gonna make sure my BIOS is flashed correctly first and then I'll try the things you suggested, after that if i still have problems I'll let you know

thanks for being so helpful :)

(i signed up another account cos my other just kept asking me to login even though i was logging in!)

welcome to the forums! the multiplier is locked and will only work on 18. what kind of cooling do you have?

I have just the normal cooling, with 3 case fans in addition to the CPU fan. I read in a few places that this is well overclockable with default cooling. Somone i read had it up to 2.6 on the same set up as me :)

I would not try anything above 2.2 gig with the retail cooler. I don't think the people making those claims know what they're talking about. The cooler the better. Heat is the enemy when you're overclocking.

HOLD ON! Wait a minute... if your default voltage is 1.75v, then you have a Willamette, which means you'll be lucky to even hit 2.0 gig. Plus those Willies run lots hotter than a Northwood.

Did you just purchase this CPU? You can return it and get a Northwood. Most places have 15 day return policy and may charge you a 15% restocking fee. You can get the 1.8A or even the 1.6A (and come out ahead on your money) and have much better end results on your overclocking. You'll probably get pretty frustrated trying to overclock that 1.8 Willamette especially since you are new at this.

in the BIOS there´s the "CPU SOFT MENU III"...

"CPU Operation Speed" must be set to "user define", then you have to disable the option "Speed Error Hold"!

Now you can try to set the "External Clock (CPU/PCI)" to 133MHz...

The "Multiplier Factor" is fixed, it will be "x18"...

"AGPCLK/CPUCLK (AGP Clock)" you should set so, that the AGP is running in specs, that means 66MHz... you have the option to fix it to 66 -> "Fix(66MHz)"!

Maybe you have to increase the VCore (CPU Voltage) a little bit...

I hope, that can help you a bit...

ok so its a willie, and i had it ages, could i just buy a NW? or whats the best intel chip to stick in this mobo now if i wanted to upgrade?

Any of the northwoods will work good but the 1.6 seems to oc the most if you get a good one. For your money i like the 2.4b, it works real good for me..@$175.00 or so'
