It's BNC and all the cables and splitters and terminators and such work, that includes the NIC

So you want to share files? or want to play a network game?
Are you comfortable with IP, IPX?

1) Stick an NIC in each. Look for a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet card. PCI.
2) Get a crossover cable and plug one end into one card, and one into the other.
3) Install NIC drivers from floppy/CD and go into the network settings in each. Give them both a static IP, say 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
4) open a Dos window on the 192.168.0.1 rig type ping 192.168.0.2. if it works the PCs are networked.

ping at 100% loss, share files and an internet connection

Both nic's installed? driver? and ip and subnetmask set as mentioned above? bnc needs 2 terminator, one at each side. rj45 kabel needs to be a crossover...

It was a working network before the XP install.

Did you run the WinXP networking wizard? It will prompt you to create a network disk to load on your WinME machine before it will all work.

I ran XP's NSW and made the disk for the other machine

Ricepr2001,

First off, welcome to the forums.

I'd recommend completely following through with the XP networking wizard, once you have the NIC's installed w/ drivers. That did the trick for me (using XP Pro networked with ME, also with a cheapo router (3Com home networking kit))

I was amazed at how robust it is. I even reinstalled XP Pro on my computer after setting up the network, and I never had to rerun the wizard. The network still ran perfectly, once I specified during the installation the name of my workgroup and computer name. (Phone dialup sharing, file sharing, and TCP/IP networking for games all work! :) )

ill try and reinstall the drivers than run the wizard again

Okay, good luck! -- Paul

If it doesn't work, please try to give us an idea of what aspects don't work. It also probably wouldn't hurt to make sure that the ME machine has been completely updated with the Windows Update utility. (If it has its own modem.) -- Paul

One thing that made a difference for me was making sure to set the XP box to "on a network w/o a domain" option and also making sure to set the workgroup to the same thing on both boxes.

Otherwise I have had no problems between my two XP boxes and my roommate's ME box. We're running off an Xsense router (generic-ish) and Qwest DSL.
