Well, my search for a laptop has finally led me to these three choices. Both the Dell and the Alienware can be customized however I want, but I thought I’d keep them right around $2300. That’s a whole lot more then I originally wanted to spend, but I think it’s worth it. What do you think?? Right now I’m leaning towards the Dell, but I’m not sure yet. If you had a choice between these three, which one would you get??

I've had a Dell, and two Toshibas: old Tosh was great, new one pretty much blows; work bought it though- cheap one, mobile celeron...YUK!

I liked the Dell Latitude a lot, so I think I'd lean towards that one: can you up the ram from 256 to 512?

And here is a point that many won't agree with (you might be one?!), but when I was looking the $2000 price range usually had Win2K as a no cost option and XP is HORRIBLE!!!!!
But thats me:D

-whistle- That's a pretty penny! :D

IMO, I'd go with the Dell. Good quality...

I just bought a Dell 8200. Almost the same as yours but only an 8x DVDrom, no CD-RW

Also 512mb of PC2100 DDR ram. I get 54xx in3Dmark2001se. I am very happy with it. Plays games great. Takes a long time to boot though.

I hear that the ATI mobility graphics are waaayyyy faster than their Nvidia counterparts, if that means anything to you.
I've never seen it, but that alienware looks like a good deal, best specs and cheapest- i'd say go with that. Also, for a laptop XP Pro is a much better choice, networking, and don't ask me why, but it gets better battery life, and XP pro is just better.

Yeah, but it costs $250 more. I think I would have it upgraded later though.

Staz, What games have you played on yours?

Serious Sam, Serious Sam 2, Medal of honor: Allied Asault. I have GTA3 waiting here but I have to wait til the grandkid isn't around to play that. I have a friend that has one also and Madden 2002, Diablo2 and some other RTS games that he has looks good on it.

I went for the upgrade to 256mb ram 1 sodimm for $50 then got a 256mb sodimm from crucial for $96. Much cheaper than the $250 Dell wanted.

The alienware does look nice but I don't think that an ATi 7500 is gonna keep up with the GeForce4Go.

Are there any reviews out on the Alienware? I can’t find any.

I would go with the Alienware, has the fastest P4 and most RAM on it, plus Alienware = performance. I was gonna get an Alienware before I realized how much cheaper I could build my own for (which still isnt built yet).

I'd go with the toshiba. It has the most impressive stats. If the extra $150 is really important to you, I'd go with the Alienware. The Dell seems crippled by its lack of memory, and considering that a 256 MB SODIMM from Crucial is $100, You end up paying $20 more and getting the same thing as the tosh.

The Alienware definately looks to be the most bang for the buck but that 3-year warranty from Dell makes up for alot.

Tough choice between those two.

actually i think you can get abetter deal if u get each part of the comuter at places like pricewatch..... also buying an athlon xp instead of a p4....

u could save a lot of money

the alienware looks the best
fastest cpu and most ram
the radeon 7500 will easily keep up with the gf4go in 3d apps and games
better dvd performance also

10gb more disk space on the alienware over the dell
but its got a 3 year warranty

Anyone know what the battery life is on the Alienware? I would think it would be pretty short with all that stuff it's got. Plus it has the Pentium 4 chip, not the P4-M like the Dell and TOSHIBA.

Dude, your gettin' a Dell!:D

Seriously, though, the P4-M's are built for laptops for one reason only. When plugged into a wall outlet, they will run at, say, 1.8GHz, but when only the battery is used, it bumps down to about 933 or 1GHz to conserve battery life. Oh, and that GeForce 4 Go? It'll easily go to 250/525:eek: Thats all there is to it, man.

I thought GF4 Gos shared system memory, but if i'm wrong, that's sweet. They go faster than a stock Ti 500!!

I would personally go with the alienware, based on specs alone it seems to be the best, and they make quality machines..but i have heard alot of good things about the dells... tough choice.

OK, just looked it up, and I'd go with the Dell. Better vid card, lighter weight, better battery performance, great support, and its FROM TEXAS!!!

Scratch that. What it does is bump proc speeds is proportion to the available power. When you plug it in or have a fully charged battery, it goes full power.

Oh, checked it out, and the Mobility Radeon 7500's and the GeForce Go's(all) run off a mini AGP slot, so it has its own memory instead of sharing. Get the Dell, man. (2 Hard Drives available, w00t!)

Yeah, I’m leaning twoards the Dell. The Alienware looks tons better, but it’s not the looks that count really. (um, did I just say that??) :p Also I’d really want to look at and try it out before I bought it. I don’t know of any place around here that I could do that with the Alienware. :(
