I have a machine that, for no apparent reason, services.exe runs amuck. All of a sudden it just jumps up to 100% CPU usage and takes over the machine. I've check Microsoft's site and every tech site I could find and come up with nothing. Anybody else have this kind of problem?

Yup!! Absolutely virus-free. That was one of the first things I checked.

Go into you Rclick my computer\manage\Services and Applications\Services and Dclick on "RunAs Service" and under start up type select disabled. Reboot and you should notice no difference. Then watch your logs =Rclick my computer\manage\system tools\event viewer. Check out both your application and system logs and watch to see what was trying to access that service. Dont know if this is your problem but it is good to check in this case.

Edit: It wont be immediatly apparant, but just check on your logs. Its also possible that you have some software with a memory leak/buggy that is causing that to happen. Keep track of whats open or what you just closed when this occurs. Better yet open and close you existing programs and monitor your task manager during the process. Its possible that a patch exists.

Hope this helps.

This is too often, even for Win98. You have to have some other problems which you haven't addressed, or else you're overclocking your memory and PCI buses so far that they're scrambling data.... :D

Did you install any program that installed a service that may be doing that?

Try disabling any services that look odd....

People go to Win2k for that EXACT reason, no need to reinstall almost at all( sorry, had to comment).

Yeah, I used to use 98 and had to reinstall quite a bit... I've been using this win2k install for about a year and a half or so, no problems. (and I install & uninstall lots of stuff all the time)
