What are my chances of getting a pair of XPs to work in SMP?
Are they good or bad? Any ideas?

They are excellent. All you need to do to guarantee it works is connect the L5 Bridge (I think that's the one!)

Yupskie, L5 is the baby. A lot of XP's already have it connected which in my case was a great relief. If you check out many of the members sigs, they have dual XP's. Myself included:)

FYI to anyone reading this (and wanting to run a budget SMP setup).....
Not all board/BIOS revision combo's that will run XP's in SMP will do the same for Morgans. For example, my setup (K7D Master/dual 1.2 Durons) will only work in SMP with BIOS revision 1.0. I have tried 1.1, 1.0, and 1.3 (in that order) and only 1.0 works and lets me use the Morgans in SMP. (Recognizes them in the BIOS as 1.2 AthlonMP's :D ) Thus far, every one I have come across with this setup has done the same thing I have.
just a heads up....

The newer 1700+ chips have the L5 issue as well.... I don't think there's a guaranteed way to avoid having to do wthe L5 bridge mod, short of buying your CPU's from a computer show or something where you can inspect them first.

I've been fortunate enough to have success with XP's on two boards, a Tyan 2460 and an Asus A7M266-D, the Tyan an MP board and the Asus an MPX.
Go HERE (http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/articles.hwz?cid=2&aid=393) for an article on the L5 bridge situation and how to remedy it and go HERE (http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/articles.hwz?cid=2&aid=395) to dispell any naysayers.
Good Luck!

I just remembered this message and finished trying it myself. I have a K7D(older=no onboard usb/lan)
Dual XP 1800 factory smp unlocked. THe system works with 1.0 but not with any of the newer Bios. Whether it's a XP/Duron thing or whether it's windows or whether there is something wrong with the bios - I don't know. Flashed 1.0 and everything is fine
It posted and recognized both of the XP's but windows(XP Pro) got a little peeved and threw some irq errors at me. Nothing I tried in the bios to remedy the situation seemed to work. Maybe I missed a setting. Maybe the ram timing needed to be changed. Or maybe. the newer bios just doesn't play nice with XP's/Durons.
The only reason that I even bothered trying to flash was that I was getting the occasional disappearing cpu. This isn't that big of a problem as the system isn't mission critical and can stand to have a weekly reboot, which is about how often the missing cpu trick occurred(maybe 2 wks). It works great otherwise.

What's MP and MPX, and how are they different? I'm looking to get into SMP in the near future. =)

My problem was a bit different... my board would display a message on POST that it detected non-MP CPU's and would proceed in uniprocessor mode, with ANY BIOS other than 1.0. My board came stock with 1.1 and I tried 1.2b and 1.3 and neither worked, only 1.0.
Hopefully this won't be an issue anymore, once I have the jingle to get some Athlon XP's or maybe even MP's to throw in here....
