View Full Version : new to overclocking
I just bought a new system. i was wondering what you all think i can oc it to.
amd xp2100+
gigabyte GA-7vrxp mobo
corsair xms 256mb pc-2700
AX-7 heatsink with vantec tornado 84.1 cfm
raidmax 400watt psu
aluminum case with up to 7 80mm fans
geforce2 pro 54mb (waiting till i get more money to upgrade this)
I want to overclock but dont need to push it too hard. Till i learn a little more about it.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Everything in your system rocks. That's one awesome set up. The only thing is that the XP2100 arent known for overclocking very well. The problem is that their already near their core speed limit and they are pretty though to unlock.
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!!!
I imagine you can get a decent overclock with it. It looks like your cooling is good enough to with that fan. I think you will have to find the numbers out yourself but if your mobo holds, you can go pretty high since you got some decent RAM. Just raise that FSB and Vcore and you'll be fine. I don't think you can unlock it very easily though b/c I think with (all??? ) the 2100+ AMD changed the L1 bridge around or something like that.
EDIT: gtsimmo is right the core is near the limits. But Im sure you should be able to surpass the 2200+ mark.

yeah you should be able to gain enough to get up to 1.8 or maybe even higher with your cooling. Im just saying dont expect it to go over 2 ghz very easily. But you never know with some luck you may get there

Welcome to the addiction!!
You could also overclock your current and future video cards.
The best thing for you do starting out would be to get some good stability testers. And maybe some new video card drivers... www.guru3d.com for drivers and video card tweaking programs. And read, read, read! These forums are brimming over with info!!!
Prime95 (www.aoafiles.com) for your CPU
3dmark2001se (www.madonion.com) for your video card, ram, and cpu
and Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu) for a constant stability test
We have in house-teams to compete at 3dmark and folding@home!

Will the 400Watt psu be enough? With all those fans drawing power im sure my system will roar like a jet. I went with raidmax, didnt find many reviews but there credentials seem to be ok. Plus i like to give the under dog a chance (AMD-----> ;) ). I was waiting for the Tbred but after reading about it i didnt think it would be any better to overclock than the palm core. Plus im on a budget(girlfriends always spoil your fun :( ).
Anyone know if the onboard sound is any good for the gigabyte mobo. If not i can save up and get a audigy.
I want to add
This forum has helped alot. I get to hear unbiased or uninfluenced reviews and suggestions. Keep up the good work. Im going to read this forum religously.

400 watts should be enough. And try out the sound first, and if you dont like it than go out and buy the sound blaster. Or at least that's what i would do
