View Full Version : AMD XP 1800+ Burning HOT ! ! !
When i first bought my XP 1800+ and ASUS A7V266-E MB the temp of the CPU would get MAX 43 degrees.
Now I've Unlocked the CPU and it gets 60 degrees hot when idleing and about 63 - 65 when on 100% load.
I've tryed setting the FSB back to 133 from 141 but with no result.
I've set all the jumpers on the MB to default and everything in the BIOS is default to (except RAM settings).
In the BIOS the CPU vcore is set to 1.750 but when i check it on my iPanel it says 1.850 ?? :eh?: ?? so does my ASUS PC Probe. (I've checked the vcore jumpers on the MB and they are set to what ASUS calls CPU default)
I think this is pretty wierd, i dunno maby its just me thats a little
screwed.
I'm yousing a TT Volcano 7+ to cool the SOB down with... Plz help :(

asus temp's are not usally even close to correct :|
Same mobo, same location, same case, same bios? I realize that bios is showing it set at 1.75 however check bios health and see if it shows 1.75. This is in the bios. Let us know.
You are way too hot. I have not heard of boards being off this much.

Well, it sounds like you messed something up betweek the HSF and the CPU. When you unlocked your CPU, you had to remove the HSF from it, right? Well, I would try to clean the HSF and CPU with Acetone (commonly found in Nail Polish), and then reapply some thermal paste (HINT Arctic Silver III ;)). This should help.

u may need better cooling...always a plus to have...my XP2000+ overclocked to 1.798 ghz runs idle @ like 29-32C depending if the AC is on...but my case is also open too...Your cpu won't last much longer @ that temp...well, it will last but not stable...my solution: Thermalright AX7 with a high output/low noise 80mm fan and some AS3... www.kdcomputers.com i bought my coolin setup from them for like a total of $52, thats with shipping and taxes...im using the 80CFM delta tho...i need to buy a rheostat for this thing...gets annoying when im watchin movies in the next room and all u can hear is whiiiiiiirrrrrr

didnt read your post completely...u definitely need better cooling..argg thermaltakes... i dispise the name...no offence to anyone using TT. imho, thermal takes are like the Slipnot song people=sh*t, TT=sh*t
Ive checked the BIOS health and it displayes 1.74 something...
What does HSF mean (Sry dont know all the shorting yet ) Do you mean that i damaged my MB ?
The CPU was totaly clean when i unlocked it... even whiped it a few times with acetone before aplying coundictive silver...
Do you suggest i remove the silver and star over again ?
Btw. I have an Antec 1030B case with 4 x Papst 2xxx RPM FANs (2 x intake "front" / 2 x outtake "back"). + cooling on the RAM. I think I'll also mention that the case has been moded with "Noise Killer" (its somelike the same as what you use in cars, but specialy made for this case, maby this also has something to do with it?)
When i open the case the temp dromp about 2 - 4 degrees.

HSF = heatsink fan
Yes, I would try to reapply the Arctic Silver.
The Noise Killer could be neoprene... The insulation you are using could be causing problems, such as absorbing the heat, which would keep the case warmer. You may want to take it out and see if that helps.
When i wrote Silver i ment Cunductive Silver (thougt my unlocking the CPU might shortcurcuite somthing causing the execive heat ):eh?:
I've tryed taking it of but its only gets me the 2 - 4 degrees drop...

I don't think it is the conductive silver. When you took your heatsink off to unlock the CPU, did you reapply the thermal paste/clean it off? Or did you take it off, unlock the CPU, then put it back on...? I would highly recommend cleaning both the CPU and HSF, and reapplying thermal paste; good chance you should get better results.
I cleaned the CPU so it looked good as new :p
Still wandering if its something in the BIOS

LOL. Did you clean the HSF, or just the CPU?

I have no idea in the sudden increase of temp. like that. Maybe you can try to get rid of the conductive silver, so your CPU is locked, and see if the temp is the same. What was the ambient before and after you unlocked?
Well before i started "playing" with the CPU and BIOS settings the temp was about 40 - 45 degrees.
Theni unlocked the CPU (try oc but its very unstable) and made my RAM run 2 - 2 - 2 - 5 - 1T
Set the FSB to 141 * 11.5 (standard) and BOOM:eh?:
60 degrees :(

I have problems too..idle temps around 62C!! I'm using a freakin All copper heatsink from Dynatron (1206BH-625) not OC'd or anything....under load its like 71C its really stupid....I bought the parts and my dad picked it up but the guy there put the heatsink on the chip...so I dont know how to take the heatsink off to check to see if he did it right and I dont know if he put proper grease or anything in....any other ideas on what could be the problem and some info on hwo to take a heatsink off??
Chip is an Athlon XP 2000+
Mobo Asus A7V333
it's never happened to me personally, so cant say I speak from experience, but I do recall a post describing the symptoms you report, and the poster said this was what happens if you chip a piece off of your cpu slug when installing the heatsink. He said the chip would appear as a small, black blemish the size of a pin point or larger, and thereafter cause the chip to run hot. Hope this isn't the case but you might get out a magnifier and check out your cpu. Goodluck..

I dont know but i think it could posibly be a sign of a weak chip.. i had an xp1800+ and tryed to overclock and temps went up majorly. and stayed up even at there i reset to stock levels.. soon after it was dead... i sent it for and rma and still havent got it back yet.
