Before I do a reinstall of Windows, I thought I'd swing this by here to see if any of you have any clue. I am running WinXP with IE6 (of course). Well, I'm not sure what it coincided with, but all of a sudden, all the animated graphics within Internet Explorer no longer animate! (ie. all the nifty Avatars in the OC Forums, and even banner ads! I messed with all the settings I can think of in the IE properties to no avail.

I check MS help, which, as you all know, was no help at all...

So... I'm about to format and reinstall Windows, but before that, if any of you have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks. (This guy isn't even crying on my screen... He just sits there and looks at me, dammit!)

You could give this a try, if you haven't already re-formatted...

Go to IE tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Multimedia. Ensure the option to show animations is turned on. If no joy, make sure your .gifs are associated to Internet Explorer - if you click on a .gif in Windows Explorer, IE should open to display it.

Go to Start | Run and type:

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll and then Enter (or click OK)

regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll and then Enter (or click OK)

After a wait you will get a *succeeded* dialogue box after each command. Click ok, reboot and see if things are fixed.

But be warned, this resets a lot of file associations back to the standard defaults, so some image viewer programs may complain - but that's an easy fix - you can pick and choose your file associations later.

Update to the latest Java VM and scripting engines -

If it still isn't fixed (make sure you reboot your system before checking) go to Start | Run and type the following:

regsvr32 /i occache.dll

Finally, some programs such as @Guard can disable animated .gifs. Ensure there are no programs set to disable gifs. ;)

Woohoo! I'm so glad you mentioned this. It was ZoneAlarm Pro! It has a default option to turn gif animation off. It was hard to find, but I found it, and now all the cute little thingees are movin' again.

Thanks. You saved me a lot of aggravation!

Yeah that drove me nuts for a few days too after I upgraded to ZA Pro.
