goes gold means testing is done, and it's good to go, they pass it off to the publisher to start stamping out that silicone :D

As Penny Arcade (http://penny-arcade.com) explains, "gold" is a euphemism.

NWN isn't even out yet, is it? How the crap can they say a game has gone "gold" when it's not even out yet? What was the last uber-game that was supposed to revolutionize EVERYTHING? Oh yeah. Daikatana. (http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=1999-11-22&res=l)

Hey, don't be dissin' Daikatana. that was the best game in the world if you take out the crappy graphics, the horrible AI, the even worse team AI, the crappy sound, the lousy gameplay, the lame weapons and did I mention the horrendous team AI?... well it was horrible.
Bioware's been on the ball for shelling out good "RPG" games (more like "interactive adventures") so I expect it will bring atleast as much joyousness as Tormet did (for me). Plus come on... it's got an easy to use module wizard/tool (the beta's even pretty slick) which will .... well you already know. that's the main thing I'm looking forward to. A way to play long distance AD&D. But ofcourse I'm hoping for a great SP experience as well.... if that sucks... I've always got Morrowind (on the PC, not the XCox).
Then explain to me what "gone gold" really means. Not just in terms of NWN, but in terms of the general game world. How can NWN "go gold" when it's not even out, where as Unreal took a few years be called "gold." What about Operation: Flashpoint? It was out for a few months before they came out with the "gold" flavor. Is "gold" a corporate euphemism for "we're going to pimp this game like the ***** it is, and shove it down everyone's throats!"?

ahhh, i can see the misunderstanding.
"Gold" as in "gold edition" is different then "Gone gold" which means that a title has been "packed and bagged", in other words it's off to the production line for retail distribution. When a title has "gone gold" it means it's done and we can expect to see it on shelves very soon (I think NWN's release date was mid to late june).

See, back in the day, when a game was ready for release, it was called "ready for release" not "gone gold." "Gone gold" give some false impression that it's good. I still stand by my belief that "gone gold" before a game even comes out is just a corporate term for "pimpin' da hos."
I first heard about this game through Megatokyo (I guess they didn't get home before it went gold ^_^) and it sounds rather interesting. I never played tabletop RPGs before, however, so I'll pro'lly suck if I ever manage to try it out. Is there a demo yet?

only a demo for the module tool set, but that's it. Demo will probably be released in the next month or so if they release one.

I think the reason its called "Gone gold" is because the company sends the publisher the master copy which is a CD that is golden in colour..Like you know in movies when u see talent agents have golden looking CD's framed and hung on walls...
Saw this thread a lil while ago, even though I rarely read in here due to that Im just not into games. Just interested in folks opinions on NWN and WCIII.
NWN prolly sold me earlier on TechTV with the gaming like D&D thing ~ heh...
And as far as the WCIII goes, Ive wanted it since I heard it was coming out. But the more and more I hear about it, Im not to sure really. Think I might end up waiting till someone I know gets it so I can check into it better and see if its something I might like.
Yes, I am a very picky person when it comes to games, Ive already spent too much cash on games I will never play. heh.
Now, as for the Gone Gold thing. This is the actual reason I decided to post in the first place.. heh... man I get side tracked easy huh? LoL
Well a quote straight from Blizzard.
What does it mean when a game "Goes Gold"?
This means that a Gold Master has been released to the CD plant for replication. Within a few days silver proof CDs are sent from the plant to our QA group were we do a final check to ensure that no anomalies have been inadvertently introduced into the CD or the code. When the silvers are approved, then the replicater starts pressing the CDs that are then shipped to our operations plant for insertion into the final box. Once the completed package comes off of the production line, it is shipped to stores.
I understand the thought us old folks have, if its gone gold, that means it rocks.. heh.. But apparently, the youngin's decided to change the meanin on us!~!
